rear end going bad?
Hey guy's, got a question for ya! I have a 1990 F350 dana 60, sterling 10.25, 460, 5 speed.
Over the weekend I had a death wobble. I, rebuilt the king pins + shimmed, steering stabilizer, new front wheel bearings, castor angle set, aligntment, tire rotate, rear end wheel bearings done cause they were going bad, all new U joints front and rear shaft.
I still got a small wobble or shimmy at about 45, anything above or below really drives smooth. I feel like the hop shimmy thing is coming from the rear end.
Tonight I pulled into the shop, and I didnt pull far enough forward after I parked it. So I hopped out and through it in neutral, grabbed a rear tire and pushed it forward. I heard and felt a light "clunk" in the rear. This is not good Im sure having blown a dana 60 ring and pinion, plus the spiders.
What could my clunk be before I remove the cover? Not too familiar with these rear ends, could the spiders be headed out?
The truck drives straight as an arrow, no shimmy, when I round a corner on the freeway, thats really long, I get the shimmy.
Thanks, Matt

First thing I would look at is the yoke on the pinion.
Make sure the nut is tight and the splines are not worn which would let it rotate on the pinion slightly.
I think I have replaced my yoke 3 times in 440,000 miles, but I do haul and tow a lot.
Did you rotate the tires after the front end work?

I rotated them after the front end work. Ok Ill check that, the previous owners were VERY harsh on this truck, so that yoke might be a possibility. Ill take a peek at it,
what should I torque that yoke to if its lose? I think these just have shims to set the preload on the pinion correct? not a crush sleave, so just torque and go is what im thinking.

ok had sometime today finally, I picked the rear end off the ground and with the tranny in gear, I rotated a tire one way, the other spun opposite. The drive shaft is not moving.
But as the tire was turning I can hear this cog wheel sound.. like the spiders contacting one another. I feel this on both tires, the sound is there no matter which way you turn it. I am strongly thinking this is the spiders going out.
What do you guys think? help! If the spiders are bad Im just gonna weld them up since Im getting a locker for the rear at the end of the summer, along with new tires, but just to make it work till then.
