C4 or C6 to go behind an FE

I've been reading tons of posts in this board about the merits of both the C4 (weaker and ligher) and the C6 (stonger and heavier) and a few have said a C4 can be built to be nearly as tough as a C6. I need to choose, since information on the FMX I took out is pretty rare and it has chipped gear teeth anyway. My biggest question is the bell housing. Doe the C4 and C6 have permanent or removable bells? If so, can I use the bell that was used with the FMX? Or do I need to find a transmission that was intended to be behind a FE engine, its a 390. I hope to get something in there soon since I just bought the truck, a '67 F100, and It's killing me not to be able to drive her! thanks!

C4 has a removeable bell housing, but a C6 does not. I don't think you will find a C4 that will bolt to any larger engine than a 351W or 351C. C4's were basically intended for small blocks in lighter-duty applications. When they say a C4 can be built to be as strong as a C6, they basically mean a stock C6. The money used to make a stronger C4 could go a long way to building a bullet-proof C6.

Talked to a couple of people who say a FE C-4 was never made, it was more for small block power.

Tractor Guy there alot of c-4's under FE powered cars and trucks. You will have to buy a special bell housing for this application. I have heard from a few people that there was 1 year that ford put a c-4 behind an FE. But no literature or anything else supports this. If you contact a major transmission Manufacturer they will usually tell you exactly where to find and how to install a C-4 behind an FE.

I hope this helps.
