'99 Expedition Engine Swap

I have a '99 EXP XLT with a 5.4L in it, 172K miles with an oil leak coming out of the head gasket. About a $2K repair at the shop so I was figuring I'd just replace the motor if I found one. I found a 5.4 with 53K miles on it ($1250) in a 2005 F-150. How can I find out if this engine will fit in my Expedition or does anybody know? My VIN is 1FMPU18L5XLA30395, don't know the VIN of the F-150 other than the eighth digit which is a "5".
Thanks.

I don't believe this is possible. Your motor is 2v and the 05 is the 3v. You would have to swap everything from the 05 into the Expy including the computer.

Thanks for the reply. What does the 'v' designate? Could you define everything other than the computer. I will have all of the accessories with this motor, just not sure on the computer part of it. Any idea if it's a plug and play kind of thing or might there be issues with the connectors and wiring harness?

I am not sure the ins/outs but you could do a search in the 5.4 forum and probably get your answers more specific than I could tell ya. I don't believe its a plug and play venture.

2V vs. 3V means the # of valves in the head, per cylinder. The 1997-2003 F-150's had 2 Valves per cylinder (1 intake & 1 Exhaust). The 04 & newer 5.4's have 3 valves per cylinder. The whole top end of the engine is different. I know to swap, you would need the complete harness, computer, fuel supply, maybe adjustments to the exhaust, etc. It would be a pretty big undertaking unless you have access to a lot of Tech data for both models to figure out what can connect where.

Tanks for that info.
So then a '97-'03 5.4 should swap out without all the issues you mentioned?

97-98 engines were lower power.

99-03 engines were called Power Improved. They had about 30 more horsepower.

As far as I know, if you stay in the 99-03 range it should be a direct swap, 5.4L for 5.4L. There may be an occasional sensor change or connector change. If you can reuse your harness, the longblocks should be the same. I haven't done a swap yet (looks for wood to knock on...) My 99 Expi just went over 90K miles.
