Cool Major new news, well to me anyway

i just read in the magazine four wheeler, that ford has announced plans to phase out the 5.4 and 4.6 in 2010, and replace it with a 5.0 liter and this engine will be shared by the mustang and f150. Is anyone as irritated by this as me????

By bother 1) being irritated and 2) carping about it.

Ford has more worries than your feelings involved in their decision...like their survival.

It is good, because the 6.2L is a much better design. Much larger bore spacing means that these new engines can actually be bored and rebuilt, as well as make much more power!!

Long overdue!!!

I know the 4.6 can be stroked out to 5.0, but at any rate the new 5.0 at least in the Mustang is rumored to be a 400 hp engine. Would you rather have that or the 300 hp 4.6?

The 4.6, which shares bore centers with the 5.4, was developed to go sideways in front wheel drive cars (the Lincoln Continental). Because of this, the bore centers are quite small--this being the reason the 5.4 is so undersquare.

I believe these engines will take a .020 or .030 overbore, but not more than that. These are such small increments that they would be useful in a rebuild operation but not worth it to increase power.

As I said before the 4.6 can be stroked out to 5.0 or even 5.1, heck FRPP sells a 5.0 "Cammer" engine. I don't know how often this is done in trucks, I know from the Mustang side its not done so often as its much cheaper to just put a blower on and call it a day. Typically its the hard core racers who do this. Check out www.dssracing.com they may have something for ya on that count.

The "cammer" engine IS NOT stroked. It's a 3.7" bore engine.

JL

My bad, I should have said bored out not stroked.

Here are some 2V variants from DSS, some 4.6, 5.0, 5.3 and 5.4's.
