i just read in the magazine four wheeler, that ford has announced plans to phase out the 5.4 and 4.6 in 2010, and replace it with a 5.0 liter and this engine will be shared by the mustang and f150. Is anyone as irritated by this as me????
It is good, because the 6.2L is a much better design. Much larger bore spacing means that these new engines can actually be bored and rebuilt, as well as make much more power!!
o ok, i didnt know that the 4.6 and 5.4 couldnt be bored out or rebuilt, is that really true?
I know the 4.6 can be stroked out to 5.0, but at any rate the new 5.0 at least in the Mustang is rumored to be a 400 hp engine. Would you rather have that or the 300 hp 4.6?
well i guess id rather have the proved 4.6 for now but later on id rather have the 5.0, has nobody in the performance world successfully bored a 4.6 out or a 5.4???

The 4.6, which shares bore centers with the 5.4, was developed to go sideways in front wheel drive cars (the Lincoln Continental). Because of this, the bore centers are quite small--this being the reason the 5.4 is so undersquare.
I believe these engines will take a .020 or .030 overbore, but not more than that. These are such small increments that they would be useful in a rebuild operation but not worth it to increase power.
o ok well thanx 4 clearing that up for me, and i guess that is why nobody has come out with a super modified 5.4 then, which really sux cause they r great engines

As I said before the 4.6 can be stroked out to 5.0 or even 5.1, heck FRPP sells a 5.0 "Cammer" engine. I don't know how often this is done in trucks, I know from the Mustang side its not done so often as its much cheaper to just put a blower on and call it a day. Typically its the hard core racers who do this. Check out www.dssracing.com they may have something for ya on that count.
well thanx 4 tellin me bout them, not tht im considering modding my 4.6 i was jus curious. so basically u need to get a regular old pushrod v8 to build alot of power and not spend a small fortune to do it

The "cammer" engine IS NOT stroked. It's a 3.7" bore engine.
