'52 F-1 Running Boards - what paint?

I finally have the frame, engine, and all the running gear in good shape. Now to start on the body parts. I am curious to know what type of paint was used on the stock running boards. I know they were black, but given they take a lot of foot wear abuse, was there something different about the paint used on the running boards to promote durability or was it basically the same type of black enamel used to top coat the vehicle?

Any information would be appreciated.
Thanks
Fred

First thought that came to my mind is to have the running boards powder coated. However, I believe that powder coating doesn't stick to body fillers. So, if your boards currently have body fller or ever get crashed and repaired, you won't be able to powder coat them.

I would just paint them black and use lots of clear coats. However, you don't want them to shine too much. I'd reduce the clear to bring down the luster.

Bondo and some paint primers will burn up when they put them in the oven for powder coating. I think there are two approaches to painting; one is use the most durable stuff there is (probably epoxy), the other is use something easy to touch up or re-do at home, because even the good stuff may look old sooner or later. An option many have used is the RhinoLiner type of urethane, which can be touched up and has a matte finish. Non-skid, too

I believe that POR-15 also offers paint that would be suitable.

I used black chip guard on my F-2's boards 10+ years ago and they look as good as when I applied it. I've dripped gas on the passenger's side, under the fill tube, many times and it doesn't seem to bother it. I go with Ross, a roll on box liner would work just as good as the chip guard. I kind of think they're both basically the same product.

I work at a industerial paint shop and we use a dupont paint called Imron its actully extremely hard, we only use basic colors but i beleive they have a chart on all the colors avaliable and we used it on alot of parts that take alot of abuse its chemical resistant and its used alot with tractor trailers and and trucks because its so durable its equal if not more durable than powder coating because we do that and yea powder coating can't be used with body filler the filler melts in the oven

Imron is tough, I sprayed it when I worked in a truck body shop but I don't think it would hope up on the running boards. Imron is an acrylic urethane, one of the best types of paints but it's not as tough as the bedliner.

I also used the Herculiner coating after I slipped getting in the truck and hurt my leg. It looks pretty good in the picture but now 5 years later they have also faded. I plan to pull them eventually, strip them and have Line X Bed liner applied to them. They can even do them in different colors these days.

The one thing about a textured coating that has held me back is that dirt will get in the texture and have to be scrubbed out. Still, I've also about hit the ground stepping onto a wet board, the texture is a good feature.

I am going to use Dupond Imron, it is tough as nails and flexible. A little expensive and use it in a well ventilated area. Only thing is it is very shiny.
