Fan roars on startup?

I had my fan clutch replaced on my 08 Expedition 5.4 while the dealer was chasing a squealing sound-didn't help- and now on cold startups my fan roars for 20-30 seconds when cold. It didn't do this before and my 07 didn't do this either. What do you think is going on?

Could be normal depending on the ambient temperature.

I am also pretty sure newer 5.4s have clutches with computer controlled lock up. I know on the newer power strokes, if it is cold enough the computer will lock up the fan, to put more load on the engine to make it warm up quicker. (Thermostat is not open, so it won't be trying to cool the engine back down).

Ford may have programmed the gassers to do the same. But it is also normal for fan clutches to be sticky on start up.

I may have an answer for you regarding the belt squeal. Have the dealer check the crankshaft dampner/pulley. Mine on my MarkVIII was squealing and I changed the belt, it still squealed so after a close inspection I noticed the belt was misaligned and that the pulley part of the dampner was about a 1/4 inch off center. I have a spare engine that donated the dampner and have had no further problem excepting noisy idler pulleys.

Well now the fan is roaring very loud as I drive it. My commute is 16 miles and it roared the entire time, freeway, city, etc. Sounds like the engine is really being taxed.

i had the same issue with my 07, it turned out to be a stuck valve in the transmission. It kept sending the computer a signal that the transmission was too hot so it would kick the fan on. take the new truck back to ford. It took them a while to get mine fixed correctly.
