Typically you see axles width measure from axle flange to axle flange, then there is an additional brake offset. Here is some info i pulled from the net for you. WMS takes into account the brake offset.

""""""""""
Brake offset-this is the measurement from the outside of the axle flange to the edge of the bearing retainer plate that bolts to the housing. Large bearing 9" housings have a 2 3/8" brake offset, and small bearing 9" housings have a 2 1/2" brake offset. There are also others such as 2" and 2 1/4", but you better have the drums and backing plates that go with those offsets or you could be in trouble as far as finding brakes to fit.

F-150 9" axle is 65" WMS to WMS, with a pinion offset 4" to the right

""""""""""""""""

i dont know what year that is for though

The term "WMS" likely came about at the same time wheels started to be sized according to "backspacing". Just my guess.

i guess we use it more here in south mn in terms to our jeeps and stuff when wanting to swap axles, cause depepnding on the width where the wheel mounts depends on backspacing of rims and tire width we can run but thx guys for the help,

Excellent find shift1313!! I had to add to your rep for that one. I really forgot about all of the great tech on this site! It seems I need to get back to checking this place out. Its so big, you kind of forget about everything it has to offer!
