390 starter issues

the original starter on the truck got replaced with a new one from auto zone

i had problems with it after about 4 uses so i removed it had it bench tested checked for metal flakes on or around the area s of question but no resolve the starter tested good on all areas

so i reinstalled it and after 4 uses the same problem its as if its not making contact with the fly wheel no missing teeth on either and it has started before with this starter ive shimmed it back before all this thinkin its overtraveling not the case

at this point ive already called autozone qnd want to return this valuecrap starter for another reman

but is there any thing im missing or should look for?

thanks

I was going to respond earlier and say that you should make sure the bellhousing is bolted to the block, but that would cause your starter to grind into the ring gear before anything.

So you are saying that the starter spins and does not engage the ring gear? I can think of a few reasons for this happening, and both you should NOT have to deal with on a new part under warranty.

Take that junk back!

I've seen this happen where a previous bad starter tore up the leading edge of the teeth on the flywheel making it next to impossible for the new bendix to engage. But that usually means several bad starters over a long period of time. Then it could be the bendix on the new starter is bad or the wrong one.

The finish means nothing. The bolt pattern, the nose length (the part that fits back into the bellhousing next to the flywheel teeth), the bendix (number if teeth, their length and how far the bendix travels) are the important things.
