First I recommend you read your owner's guide. There is a lot of good information in there including the answer to your question.

That being said when the front hubs are in the auto position the front wheel freely rotates in respect to the front axle. Then when you turn the **** on your dash to 4x4 there is a vacuum pulse that gets sent to the hubs and tells the hubs to lock onto the driveshaft.

If for some reason the vacuum system does not work correctly (which was very common on the older Super Duty trucks) you can manually turn the hubs to the lock position to get the wheels to lock to the axle. It is pretty much just a manual override of the automatic system in case of failure.

Also if you want to lock the hubs in because you are stuck but the truck won't move enough to do the job you can walk out there and manually lock them in.

Leaving them in the auto position will yield the best fuel mileage.

Also to add. The auto hubs are junk they tend to where out making them stick into 4 wheel drive. I had this problem on my 99 f-250 sounded like my wheel berring was going out. Got a nice set of warren manuial lock hubs and that took care of that problem.

It looks like mongas has a '09 SD. I'm pretty sure the newer auto hubs are supposed to be some better than the older hubs.

That was the needle bearing inside the wheel bearing going bad. Did you happen to lube it?

I thought somewhere around '05-'06 they made a change to make them more reliable.

With the coil-spring front-end, the hubs are different. Can't speak to reliability, but all those that come here looking for help with the auto-locking hubs seem to be overwhelmingly pre-05. The only 05-up ones that complain usually have a broken vacuum line.

Yes the 05 up ones have a different hub. They seem to have much less problems so far, and I think that is why no aftermarket company bothers to make a replacement for them.
