01 excursion trnasmission question

Hi everyone
I just found this site from a tractor board a few days ago and I have a question. Just recently my 01 excursion has started vibrating when it is in overdrive. It is worse at lower speeds than higher ones. Trans level is good and fluid looks and smells good. It is powered with a V10 and drives fine in the other three gears. has anyone else had this problem with an excursion?

Where is the vibration felt and does it whine/whistle?

It could be several things, DriveShaft balance, TC clutch, OD clutch/gear, ujoints.

no whine or whistle. Just the whole thing vibrates and only when it is in overdrive. And it seems that when the oil is cold it doesn't. The transmission doesn't slip and it almost seems as if the engine has a miss to it. Why it would it only miss in overdrive I have no idea. It has been showing the check engine lite now could it be possible that an oxygen sensor or something could be causing it ????

Sounds like a bad Coil On Plug and it is bad enough to set the Check Engine light. That's a good thing as you can get the codes read to help point oyu in the correct direction to repairing it.

Autozone and other stores typically will read the code for free. If you aren't familiar with the codes and the diagnosis that the code can help with, then get the code and post it here. Folks here can help you from there.

A bad COP will show itself in a high load, low RPM situation. That's running on OD at low speeds.

I'm with Monsta. I went through the same thing a few weeks ago. It only seemed to bother in overdrive from 1200-1900 rpms. Put my code reader on it, and found my #2 cylinder was misfiring. A little dielectric grease and I saved myself a transmission.

thanks guys
So far it seems to be the coils. I picked up two yesterday and swapped one at a time to see if I could find one that was causing the miss. No auto parts stores in my area will scan the engine. I figured by the time I went to a garage to get the code read it would cost me as much as the coils so I played swap today. Both 1 and 5 were replaced from original. I started with 1 and nothing changed until I got to 5, that one was very warm and all the others were cold when I took them off. So I left one new one there and the miss cleared up some but was still there.I got all the way down to #9 and I still had some missing in overdrive.
I was concerned at that point but when I swapped # 10 The miss went away what a relief! I've only drove it 2 miles so far but all seems fine I am changing oil now so maybe tomorrow I will take it for a drive and see if all is well. Thanks a for helping me out

The back 2 coils (5 and 10) tend to go bad first because of the heat back there.

Tried to rep you Ken, but I got that darn "spread it around" message.
