1973 F350 Crew Cab on 1979 F600 4x4 chassis
Hi All,
I'm new to this site. Actually, I've never posted to any site before, so please excuse any social blunders on my part.
I have several Ford pickups and have been thinking about a new project that I'd like to work on. I am no expert when it comes to Ford trucks, however, I would like to learn and enjoy building my project. I appreciate any help and look forward to sharing my experiences here.
I have a 1973 F350 Crew Cab (2wd) that I'm thinking about swapping the cab and bed onto a 1979 F600 4x4 that I have. Both trucks are complete and original.
The F600 4x4 is a fire pumper that I bought from a fire department. The F350 is a Camper Special 2WD that has spent its life (as far as I can tell) in the Southern California. The F350 Crew Cab still has the original paint and is pretty straight, although by no means perfectly straight.
I'm thinking about swapping the F600 cab for the F350 crew cab and bed to end up with a 4x4 crew cab. I'm pretty impressed with how heavy duty the F600 running gear is. The F600 has (as far as I can tell) a 370 cu in V8, 5-speed trans and an NP205 divorced transfer case.
I'll try to get some photos posted.
Cheers

welcome. i could be wrong, but i think you have to have 25 posts before you can post pics on the post.i beleive you can set up you gallery with the pics and we can go to your gallery and veiw the pics there. if im wrong im hoping someone will help, and steer you correctly. sounds like great project, you know you can use the f 600 nose(fenders, grill, hood) with the 73 crew cab ,it all is compatable. that would look great.keep us all up to date with your build, pics will be cool!!!good luck.-billy

im pretty sure that the cabs between these trucks use different cab mounts at the front of the cab too. the sheetmetal on the cab is different. i know it appears different, i dont know if the corresponding mounts will bolt up or not, but they deffinately look different. personally, unless the firetruck cab is trashed, i would leave it how it is, it's a piece of history. i do think the idea of putting the crew cab on the f600 chassis is a pretty darn cool one, but my opinion would be to leave to two how they were, after all, theyre survivors when most of these trucks have been beaten and worn to nothing.

Well I'm doing about the opposite of you. I have a cab from an F600 crew 2wd that I'm putting on my F350 4x4 chassis. I'm using the F600's 5speed, and divorced NP205. Yes the front cab mounts are different. On the F600 they are lower and further back, giving it a little built in body lift. I have pics in my gallery. Rear cab mounts are on a crossmember between framrails, like a reg cab. On my build my front cab mounts will have to be fabbed to straddle the rear perch/shackle for the front springs. The firewalls are totally different as are the dashes and door handles. Too bad we're not closer, or we could just swap cabs, and save each other some work.

Well I like what you are looking to do in fact if I could of found a 4X4 f600 within a reasonable distance from me I would of gone a bout my truck in a different mannner. Jake is right your f350 crew cab's mounts are different than the f600 cab. However being as you are planning to go from reg. cab to crew you allready new you were going to have to put in a cab cross member. The noses are interchangeable f500 600 700 800 all will line up to the cab of a f150 250 350. I know this because I put a nose off a 1976 f600 box truck on my 1979 f150. It did require putting a 3" body lift under the 4 cab mounts and welding in a custom front cross member to support the f600 radiator support and a little notching of the very front of the frame horn. Good luck on the project and post some pictures of the trucks and project.
