How much pedal travel before you get pressure. Try adjusting the rear brakes.
Fluid, dirty or clean, doesn't cause a spongy pedal, air does.
You might have a master cylinder in your future if there are no leaks.

pedal drops at least halfway before you feel them grab...one pump brings the pedal to the top...no dropping...guess I'll be bleeding the system soon ans swap out the fluid....is the same brake fluid as any other vehicle....noo???.....

I believe that it is DOT 3 and up. I agree with Jim on this one the dirty fluid doesnt affect travel. I would bleed the brakes and adjust the rear like Jim said and that should set you up right.

Yep, DOT 3. Some of the newer brake fluids can attract moisture....
Keep us posted.

I do not wish to hi-jack the thread, but this is relavent. I wanted to know if I am OK with DOT 4 in my system? I know that the cap calls for DOT 3 but somehow I ended up putting DOT 4 in the lines. I have a 97 F-350. I assume that is OK to leave it in.

Yep DOT 4 is OK too. DOT 5 and some of the synthetics (hi-temp stuff) attracts moisture.
A little reading:
