DT466 Swap

DT466 Swap
Have 1992 F350 4x4 w/6.9 banks turbo w/ZF 5 single mass flywheel. Engine using too much oil. Have a 1993-1994 7.3 IDI turbo motor that I would like to swap in ---BUT--- on the competion forum there was a post about a DT466. Question will it fit in the truck and with a ZF5 trans. Also unterstand that without turning the engine into a big explosion 400+ horsepower is an easy do.
Any info would be great.

I've heard of a few people putting a DT466 in these trucks, but I've never seen it done. I bet the zf would told up to the torque as long as you didn't max out the 466.
I did see however a 85 Ford with a Cat 3208 in it, but it had the tranny that came behind the motor when it was still in a dump truck.

Something to consider,
The ZF 5 S42 is only rated for 419 Ft Lbs with the 5.72 low gear and 433 Ft Lbs with the 4.65 low gear ratio.
The ZF 5 S47 is rated for 462 Ft Lbs with all ratios.
ZF 6 is rated for 520 Ft Lbs
Without looking up the 466 specs, driveline problems would be in your future after that swap.
I also know someone who had a 3208 in an early 80's truck and he also used the Clark direct drive 5 speed truck transmission.
Top speed was slightly under 50 MPH, the 3208 only turns 2100 RPM.
And the torque took the drive shaft out every time he drove it.
He only lives 10 miles outside town, he did get it to town a couple times, but never made it back home in the truck.
Start up a hill and that Cat govenor would open up, bang there goes another driveshaft.

A little off topic maybe, but thanks for the specs on the ZF. Whats the difference between the S42 and the S47? Besides max. torque rating obviously. Is one diesel and the other gas? or where they just remade stronger at one point? One note, and suspicion tho. I would put my money on a ZF-5 over a ZF-6 ANY day. The 6 imo... JUNK.

A DT466 would destroy a ZF5 speed. You have allot more torque there.
I know the numbers may be close on paper but the the DT466 has more sustainable power. It is kinda hard to explain.
It like comparing some firearms in a way. There is more to the power of a specific round then velocity and lbs of energy.

The S42 was the first one out.
Like most things the second time around the S47 was a better, stronger transmission.
If you saw the inside of both of them side by side, the ZF 5 looks like it is out of a Toyota in comparison.
The ZF 6 has a real oil pump, real gears and a real case.
Sadly it has no provisions for a speedo drive or their would already be one in my truck.

10 power levels from 210 HP and 520 Ft Lbs to 300 HP and 860 Ft Lbs at 2600 and down to 2400 RPM.
I can teel you would be going very slow drivng it, and none of the ZF transmissins are going to stay behind one very long.
Transfercases would be a second issue.
Driveshaft, U joints and pinion yokes would all be very short lived.

I go to to many places, country and city to be without a speedometer.
Tickets cost way to much in more than one way today.
And I normally run through at least 3 speed traps a week, mostly in school zones.
Hard to keep track of maintenance and fuel mileage without an odometer.
No speedo is not an option for me.

Lol, speedo goes into the transfer case. . .I want to say always because wouldn't your speedo and odo be off if in 4 low if it was before the T-case?
All my years crawling through junkyards and under trucks and I have yet to see any (Ford at least) 4x4 transmission with a speedo provision actually in the case somewhere. . .especially ZF's. . .even the SuperDuty ZF's speedo is in the brake housing
And if you're thinking of a divorced setup the speedo cable still goes to the divorced T-case. . .
Assuming we are talking about you 86 4x4. . .so no more excuses!! I expect a write up in the next 2 weeks!
