That is actually pretty high for a 4.6L with a load. I am up to 16.5mpg with a 5.4L but I have done tons of mods to get it there from the 12.8mpg I used to get in more or less stock form.

Mileage depends a lot on over all gearing. Are they stock sized tires? Once you go to bigger tires, mileage usually drops. Also, what gears are in it? I've noticed different gears have different sweet spots. And if you've changed tire sizes, that sweet spot changes.

I have stock tires on my 03 Screw, 17", and 3.73 rear end. Sweet spot on mine is about 63-65. I can get up to 18 with no winds. More typical (because it's always windy) is 16.5 to maybe 17. At 75, it'll be flat 16. All of these no loads.

I have a 3500 lbs pop up camper. I'll run 60-65 with that. I get usually 13-14mpg.

Also realize, the newer trucks have the PI heads in them. So that might help mileage a bit. That and I think the 4.6 just has to work harder than the 5.4 given the same conditions. So the sweet spot on the 4.6 is probably 55 or so.

There are just so many variables to mileage. Best you can do is keep up the maintenance, and keep the foot off the gas.

AGREED COMPLETELY!
My dad had a 97 4.6L Ext cab Off Road Package, all stock and would get 19-20, not loaded with anything.

I have a 02 Ext Cab FX4 5.4L with 35s and 4.56gears (effective ratio 4.10) and get 14mpg just city driving. Last highway trip got 16.5 running 70-75mph.
