What are you trying to accomplish?
Are you just trying to get an 8 lug front end? Changing the components from the knuckle out will accomplish this.
Many variables here. What are you working on?

78 1/2 ton. My 9in. is about to go caput, and my buddy just happens to have a d60 laying around thats good. But i dont want a 8 lug back and a 5 lug front. he also has a set of HD axles too. so if i could have eight lug front and back i wouldnt look so much like s%$t.

You don't need to change the shafts. Just the spindles, caliper brackets, hubs. The lockouts are the same from 5 to 8 lug.

Not in your case, but in early D44 high pinion axles the shafts and u-joints were smaller. I know this because I replaced them with the 3/4 ton pieces out of a '78 f250. The housing is offset differently between the 3/4 and 1/2 ton axles. I had to cut about a 1/4" off of one of the shafts, it bottomed out on the cross-shaft of the spider gears before it would seat far enough I could get the spindle on. Just my experience.
