Ford will tell you otherwise. Mercon V is all that they will use.

A good question...and one that you will NOT get a correct answer to.

Back in 2003, all Escapes?Tributes were TSB'd to use ONLY Mercon not Mercon V.
Later, Ford retracted that and said that Mercon was no longer being made and that Mercon V is perfectly acceptable. Double-talk.

My opinion is not to mix the types.

Sort of like Harley Davidson telling owners that any synthetic oil was a potential for engine damage and only their dino oil was any good, until they started selling a synthetic with their name on it. Then its OK to use it!!!

If you are topping off the trans use Mercon. If you are going to completely flush the trans and change the filter you may use MerconV if you wish to do so. Do not mix the two. Use one or the other. Dan.

I just had the tranny flushed at Mr. lube and they flushed 12 liters of black nasty factory fluid for Esso Mercon V and the tranny feels better.. shifts are more defined.

Keep an eye on it. Any shuddering or slipping and get it right back to a tranny shop.
