Starter Solenoid

How do you know if it is going out? My engine will NOT turn over. I just hear a ticking sound from the Starter Solenoid.

disconnect the fat wire going to the starter... if the ticking stops then change the starter.

the starter is shorting out and causeing the solenoid chatter.

A common cause for the clicking is a bad connection at the battery or a low battery.

If you want to test the solenoid, take a small wire and jump #3 to #5 in the diagram aboveMake sure the truck is in park or neutral. The solenoid should click, and the starter should turn. If it doesn't, then take a large jumper cable and jump #3 and #6 in the diagram above. If the starter will turn, then yes, I would suspect a bad solenoid.
