Rim width for wider tires?

I currently have 16.5 rims with 36x12.5 Goodyear bias ply tires on my 99' f250 with 8" fabtech lift. I recently bought the truck and discovered that the tires do not perform well at all at Pismo in the sand. Also, I can only safely air down to about 20 psi since the rim's lip is very shallow. Anyway, I am considering replacing this setup with wider tires and possibly larger rims. My question is, how wide of a rim do I need to hold 14-15.5 wide mud tires. I would like 20's but the widest I can find is usually 10 inches. Does anyone know what would be a good rim/tire setup for my truck. It is an everyday driver, but I drive on sand often. I was thinking Nitto or Toyo, however both are kind of expensive. Also, I would like to find rims with little backspacing since I like the wider stable appearance on lifted trucks. Is that possible with 20 inch rims? Thanks

a 14-15" wide tire will run on a 10" wheel just fine. im doing it now....but its a 15"

the problem with the 20", theres far less sidewall. might experience some funny wear with a 14-15" wide on a 20x10" rim..

also, the tire will have a recommended rim width...check the tires you're planning on getting. that should tell you.

Our website has a specs section that will provide a recommended rim width range for the tires we sell. Just look for the "specs" tab under any given tire.

Thanks.

I would sugest the 10 inch wide for 14.5-15 but would not go with a 20" rim like stated above the sidewall is too small and you may still have problems with air downs.

I've been looking around and irok has a set of tires, the ssr 38x15.5x20 and the chart says they will work with 10-12 inch wide rims. Do you think it would be a bad idea to run them on 20x10s? Also, has anyone had experience with irok? Thanks

You can run those tires on the 10 inch wide rime but like stated earlier your tires will wear differently then with a 12 inch rim. the centers will go alot faster. As for the Iroks I have not ran them myself but I know a few guys in our club that do and they say they run pretty well but add to the road noise considerably.
