Cleveland or not

I was brousing a local pull-a-part lot this weekend and came across something I need help with. When I finially got the hood of a 72 Ranchero I think I saw a 351 Cleveland 4V engine. I know it was 4V because of the 4 holes in the manifold where the carberator once was. The only catch was that the manifold was set up for a "spreadbore" type carb like the Rochesters. I didn't know Ford ever produced anything like this from the factory. I did look like the factory cast iron manifold.

Was I really looking at a Cleveland? Is it worth the $131 to find out?

Numberdummy will know for sure. Wiki is many times unreliable, but if they are right:

Ford 335 engine - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Could it be a 351 CJ? What is the engine code on the VIN?

That spreadbore manifold is the clue. The 4300D is a spreadbore, possibly limited to HO or CJ engines...

If it's a CJ and not split open some place, it might could be worth all of $131.

If I were you, I'd PM Numberdummy and get is opinion and see if the engine codes in that link are correct, along with the application info.

Good luck.

I have never heard of a 351M or a 400 with a 4 barrel.

No.

No 351M's till 1975 in cars-thru 1979 (1977/82 in F100/350's, 1978/82 in Bronco's, 1980/82 in Econolines).

All were two bolt mains, all were 2V's, and all were a smogged terd of an engine with heads that cracked, usually just after the 2/24 warranty ran out.

1972 passenger cars (which includes Ranchero's) = the VIN engine code is the 5th digit: H = 351C 2V / Q = 351C 4V w/ 4 bolt mains.

D2AZ-9510-N .. 4V Carburetor-4300 Motorcraft / Application: 1972 351C 4V's used in Mustangs and Torino's.

Ranchero & Torino = same-o same-o, 1968 thru 1976.

Wiki Wiki = wrong as usual! The VIN engine code of M was not used after 1971.

Wiki Wiki = wrong again! Ford never refered to any V8 engine as a small block.

I wouldn't trust a friggen thing Wiki sez inre to Ford engines, and there's a lotta other wrong info there on tons of other subjects.

Example: They called the 330/361/391 FT engines, FE engines in another one a their flawed Ford engine entries.

My info source = 1965/72 Ford Passenger Car Parts Catalog.

Visually, if the thermostat housing is in the timing cover housing, which is cast as part of the block, it's probably a Cleveland. Others had the thermostat housing in the intake man.jd

The OP sent me a P/M, it's a Q car = 351C 4V w/4 bolt mains.

The 351C/351M/400's have several other unique features, the fuel pump mounts to drivers side of the block. The bolts are at 12 and 6 o'clock, the only engine series that has fuel pump bolts in this position.

There's no timing cover, just a flat engine front cover plate.
