help timing chain install

ok im changing the timing chain to a pre smog timing set i already have everything out rad, waterpump, fan, now im to the crank pully and timing cover and i have never done this before so i thought i would get some advice/tips or yall could point me to another thread i seached but had no luck. anyways just to make sure im doing this right i set the motor at tdc on the compression stroke and if i pull the valvecover the valves should be closed. now heres the thing how do i get the crank pully off with out turning the crank? is it the smaller bolts that i take out of the crank pully and not the big nut in the middle? sorry guys i know this is a stupid Q i just would rather ask and do it right the first time.

well i took the smaller bolts off and the crank pully came off so what the trick to getting the harmonic balancer off with out turning the motor or should i just take it off then put the bolt back in then set it at tdc again?

You need a puller. You have to take off the bolt in the center of the harmonic balancer. Take the washe off it thread the bolt back in half a dozen turns Attach the puller with bolts to the holes that held the pulleys on. Tighten the puller bolt against the balancer bolt & pull the balancer. The crank will turn but just set the balancer on the crank & turn it back. The alignment you need to worry about is the Cam & Crank gear when installing the chain.Hope this helps

An impact gun helps here.
The bolt has a regular thread, so you want to turn it counter-clockwise to remove it.

If it has the outside weight,I put a 2*4 up against it to stop the motor from turning. Tighty-righty;lefty-loosey

Spacer should slide off the front of the shaft. Make sure the woodruff key (little half moon shaped key that fits in slot) for the balancer is not in. Don't loose that woodruff key it what lines up the balancer! That's probably hold you up.

If the engine is still in the truck you may have to crawl underneath to see the slot where the key is.

If he's @ TDC #1, as he should be, then the groove is right at the top.

Have you tried something like PB Blaster?

Can you pull the gear, and sleeve off together, even just to get it to budge?
