help timing chain install
ok im changing the timing chain to a pre smog timing set i already have everything out rad, waterpump, fan, now im to the crank pully and timing cover and i have never done this before so i thought i would get some advice/tips or yall could point me to another thread i seached but had no luck. anyways just to make sure im doing this right i set the motor at tdc on the compression stroke and if i pull the valvecover the valves should be closed. now heres the thing how do i get the crank pully off with out turning the crank? is it the smaller bolts that i take out of the crank pully and not the big nut in the middle? sorry guys i know this is a stupid Q i just would rather ask and do it right the first time.

You need a puller. You have to take off the bolt in the center of the harmonic balancer. Take the washe off it thread the bolt back in half a dozen turns Attach the puller with bolts to the holes that held the pulleys on. Tighten the puller bolt against the balancer bolt & pull the balancer. The crank will turn but just set the balancer on the crank & turn it back. The alignment you need to worry about is the Cam & Crank gear when installing the chain.Hope this helps

well i called my uncle today and he told me how to get it off. he told me to put the breaker bar on the bolt and use the frame to brace it and BUMP the starter and bam worked great. well anyways i was doin the swap because i thought this truck had a smog chain so i wanted more power, well i got the cover off tonight and what do you know it already has a doubleroller chain on it and the dots are lined up with the teeth so im thinkin dang that was all for nuthing and i was cleaning everything up getting ready to put it all back together and i find the the chain has a broke link on the back side and one of the chain rollers is about to fall off so now im thinking wow its a good thing i did all this and found this chain because im hard on my truck sometimes and i just got a set of mt et streets. i wonder what would of happned if that chain broke lol

now i cant get the spacer off the shaft what gives? im not mad its just that i have never done this before and dont have any kind of book or somebody lookin over me watching and telling me what to do. so how do i get this space off, this is about a 1975 460 so does not have the funny shaped spacer/balancer

Spacer should slide off the front of the shaft. Make sure the woodruff key (little half moon shaped key that fits in slot) for the balancer is not in. Don't loose that woodruff key it what lines up the balancer! That's probably hold you up.
If the engine is still in the truck you may have to crawl underneath to see the slot where the key is.
