Configuration Q's - 84 F250 with a 1 ton read end

OK...

I have a 1984 F250 Supercab, 2WD.

The rear end was replaced a few years ago with a 1 ton rear end by the previous owner (he has no data on it). I do not think it is a 1880-86 rear end. The shoes are 3.5 inches wide and the drum is a 12 inch drum.

I am at O'Reilly's and got drums, shoes, spring kit, accessories kit and parking brake cable to make the thing all new. They are looking it up and tell me I have a dually rear end but not dual tires (single tire on each side).

The shoes fit nice (correct config for adjusting pin, adjusting cable guide etc...) but they are 3 inch shoes, the drum is the right diameter but not deep enough. Even with 3 inch shoes it rubs against the side of the shoes before bottoming out on the plate with the lug bolts.

So I call O'Reilly's (we are all guessing right now) and the fellow tells me I might have a 87-94 rear end (they had 3.5 inch shoes). I say OK. Got new drums, shoes.

The shoes do not fit correctly. The shoes are 3.5 inches wide and the right diameter but the mounting iron inside the shoe is not the correct configuration (no hole for guides) etc.

Any ideas what I may have (wow...I know that is a question of majestic proportions).

Thanks,

Tim

First step would be to identify the rear axle. How many bolts hold the cover on? Is there a fill plug in the cover? Is there a Dana BOM stamped into the axle?

Bolted on the left (drivers side) of the axle housing just adjacent to the inspection cover on Dana 60, 61's & Dana 70 axles is the Dana Axle ID code.

The axle code is on a 2" x 1/2" metal plate. 2 bolts are used to attach it. It's also possible the tag is on the left axle tube.

The code is similar to this: 603010-1.

Post what you find, I can decode it and tell you exactly what it's from.

There also may be a Ford ID axle tag under one of the inspection cover bolts. Post that, too.

EDIT: First year for 3 1/2" rear brakes shoes: 1987.

These 3 1/2" rear shoes were used on F350's (and E350's), which used the Sterling 10.25 full floater.

OK...false alarm.

This will make you laugh...I know it did me, only from the frustation factor.

The shoes in the box were the wrong part. The box was labeled properly...but had 92-93 Chevy truck in them.

I noticed after awhile (assuming they would be correct and not suspecting they would be wrong) that the number stamped on the shoe was FMS656 (Chevy)...and it should be FMS583 (Ford)...

...got the right ones ordered.

NumberDummy...I will crawl out tomorrow and see what it is.

Thanks everyone. Tim

Well I went out and looked...beside finishing the brake job now that I have all the correct parts.

Did not lose too many pieces of flesh...but man those hold down springs...got to hold your toungue in your cheek just right to get those on (of course there is probably some cool quick way that I am about to learn).

ANyhooo. There is no tag on the rear end. Some casting marks of which the most sensical was 7037 on one corner of the rear of the pumpkin.

There are 12 bolts and I think it is out of a 87-94 F350.

What is a 10.25 full floater?

The emergency brak was giving me some adjida. Would not returnt oo well..and the one not trturning was the new one on the left side I installed. Should that cable be lubricated in he housing it runs through? It seemes to be catching on both sides on the adjusting spring that is at the end of the cable running down from the pivot.

How tight should that piviot nut be on the inside of the backing plate? There is a pivot spring (about as round as a quarter)...and if you tighten it too much the spring will not be a spring anymore.

Thanks,

Tim
