04 F250 gas cap light/check engine light

My gas cap light came on about three weeks ago and just like the owner manual says if that light stays on for a long enough time the check engine light will come on as well, which it did today.. My question is what caused the gas cap light to come on??? Ive turned and twisted that thing in every which direction possible and nothing would make the light turn off.. Now that both lights are on how do i go about getting them turned off without going to the dealer and paying $100 to do so...

I would say you have a faulty cap first. Try getting a new cap and see if that helps. You might also be able to unplug the negative battery cable and let it sit for a bit and then plug it back in. I think that might clear the code, who knows but I would start with a new cap.

Welcome to FTE. I'd agree with Ryan and start with replacing the gas cap.

Sorry, I know i am not being helpful. But I am still voting for the hammer method. Please let us know what fixed it, in case anyone else has the same problem.

I seriously considered the hammer idea, but just today decided to go with the new gas cap idea.

My light came on a few weeks ago. I fiddled with the cap and the light stayed on. I disconnected the battery (negative cable) for a minute and then hooked it back up. Then the light went off on the dash. But after about a week it came back on, so today I put a new locking cap on, disconnected the battery, hooked it back up and no light!

Lets see how long it stays off...

The only bummer about disconnecting the battery is that when you hook it back up my alarm goes off and that dang horn is LOUD when you are standing right in front of it.
