Convert a 1978 f250 to a rollback tow truck

Toolman informative post. The link on the sneeker lift does mention re-inforcing the frame as well. I just thought that could be a better option vs. putting the hauler bed he wanted to build. Car trailer would be OPs better option I think, but he wants something different which is cool. But he is open to suggestions and it seems to me he is thinking about safety as well. Very good first post.

How much does the front end of a truck (f100 to f350 only) typically weigh? What I'm thinking is getting a class III or IV hitch hooked up to the rear of the truck, build an attachment that has an arm that pivots up and down, which has the things that go under the tires of the vehicle. Then I'll use a winch to pull it off the ground, and lock it with a safety pin.
What do you all think? Do you reckon that would require beefing up the frame? I could have a proffesional welder friend box it in some. I'm thinking of using one of them heavy duty pintle hook systems that farmers use on tractors. That way I could detach it easily when not in use, and it would act like a hinge, it would allow a little rotation in all the directions needed.
I look forward to your input, and thanks for all of the info and opinions thus far.

Don't know the weight of a F150-F350 at the front but i can say that the Sneeker truck squatted good when I towed my 98 Dodge Ram 1500 4x4 backwards. BTW this truck has a 10 leaf main spring pack, disconnected Aux. helpers and airbags.
I have seen much SCAIRER setups at the recycing yard we frequent .
have seen good homebuit units too. Or you could find an older slide-in wrecker unit for a pick-up and fit it to your truck. These generally were calbe operated booms and a PTO winch (change over to electric). Had one of these also and sold it.
Many, many options. Good luck

I plan on driving it over some scales here pretty soon (hope I don't get caught driving with out insurance/good plates!) That way I know exactly how much weight capacity I have to play with. I'll weigh the whole truck, as well as the front and rear separately...
That should help me out tremendously...
