While I was driving today, the overdrive light on the shifter blinks on and off and I notice that it shifts a litte rough now, any thoughts?

My thought is that when the OD light flashes a code is stored in the computer's memory. Get the codes read and then we can point you in the right direction. Without the code all anyone can tell you is that something is wrong. Severa people will probably answer here with things for you to check and spend money on, but that's all a waste without knowing the code.

So that's what the flashing lamp is for.

My thought is to replace the VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor)on the top of the rear diff. It's about a $25 part, and one 10mm bolt. Very simple. If the vehicle's computer can't read speed, the tranny won't shift right and the OD light will blink. But that's just my opinion.

Dont replace anythig until you get it read. Your VSS can still be good, and your jest easter egging if you replace parts without knowing the code. Its also set off from tc slippage, but this is only able to happen when in OD and tc locked. Do you still have stock tranny cooler? Are you noticing RPMS slide up a little on a grade even when empty? It could be as simple as gunk on the end of the VSS. Clean it off reinstall and go someplace to get codes pulled.

Alright, P-1728 {3}{4} Transmission Slip Error Conveter Clutch Failed indicated today when we hooked it up. We cleared the code and I drove the truck approx. 15 miles with no problems then the flashing light came back on and the trans started shifting rough again.

The comp also indicated; TSB 98-14-19 and TSB 98-4-19 troubleshooting codes.

Any suggestions, thanks.

Most likely it is the torque converter clutch apply piston has a crack. That's not unusual on E4ODs. A new torque converter is required to fix it.

Searay, listen to Rubberduck he knows his sh**. Once you have checked it out you can try to reset it by unpluging fuse 22 under the hood. However this dose not fix enything just stop the light and make it shift the rightway(for a while). and again listen to Rubberduck. Good luck.

So Ingman, are you saying to ignore the computer's code TSB's and replace the VSS first? Thanks

What you need to do is check it against itself. The only time that the computer reads the VSS against the TC is when it is locked for 1 to 1. As stated, you can always pull the VSS, clean it and see if that helps, I have heard that some guys have done this and it fixed the problem. My guess for that scenario is that the dust shavings accumulated in the oil from the ring and pinion gear accumulate there, causing the read error. I put a tc in my 96 from either autozone or advanced, I cant remember which, and it was 220 bucks. I put that thing in about 65k miles ago, and have towed MORE than 15,000 pounds three times a week since installed, never even had a hiccup out of it. If your handy, you can do it yourself. It took me about 5 hours to change mine out, but I must admit, I have done or two before, have air tools, etc....

You REALLY need to get rid of the stock cooler before its too late. If your driving this truck and your getting that code (and it IS your TC like I suspect) your generating A LOT of heat from it slipping. All this does is start to fry your tranny as well. Heat is NUMBER ONE enemy of your trans.

After thinking about what rubber duck said, you MAY want to change the vss first.
KISS method may apply. While it MAY fix the problem, it MAY not, but your only out 5 mintues and 25 bucks. If you go staraight to the TC, your out many hours, and many hundered dollars. This may be a Keep It Simple Stupid scenario........just a thought. Let us know what you find. Also, post where you live so that if someone is close, they can help you wrench if you need them, possibly for a few beers and a burger......
