On my 2000 Expedition 4x4 theres a battery cover that covers the top of the battery what is this for? I think im going to take it off. I dont think it does anything.

It's my understanding that this cover is to prevent the hood from contacting the battery post and shorting out in the event of an accident. I took mine off originally but have since put it back on for this reason.

Are we all talking about the same piece? I think Gage2502 is talking about the BIG cover that fits over the entire battery except for the battery posts. I think madsonp is talking about the LITTLE cover that snaps over the positive battery post to prevent the positive battery post from contacting metal parts in case of an accident to keep it from arcing and a sparking.
I was thinking it was the plastic cover that fits over the battery but not the cables. My original cables are long gone and when I replaced them, they didn't have the insulated cable cover. Next time I'm in the parts store, I'll pick one up just as added protection. I think if I shorted the positive terminal to ground, I would blow the mega fuse before the battery would blow. But, thats something I think I don't want to find the answer to the hard way.
Its vented so it allows fumes to escape. Otherwise you'd have a build up of hydrogen gas. Not a good thing. But it does trap the fluids when the battery sweats and channels them down to corrode the nice metal battery tray.
