1986 302 efi idle
I have a 5.0 fuel injected engine with the AOD. whenever i start it, it will rev and then cut out and almost stall and then rev again continuously. it does this about 75 percent of the time, other times it runs alright. Also, it idles very high. After i put it in drive, it will go at about 40 mph without even touching the gas pedal. any ideas on what my problem could be??

your problem is the tps sensor
the throttle position sensor tells the computer where the butterflies are in the throttle body.the sensor is like a reostat when you push the gas peddle down the butterflies in the throttlebody open up letting air in at the same time it advances the tps and the computer takes the reading and then tells the injectors to inject more fuel
the sensor is located on the t. b. and has a spring loaded dial that must engage with the butter fly shaft.
had one go out on mine

I Had the same problem on mine. Turned out after $1,00 worth of new parts (all new sensors, and distributor, & a whole bunch of other parts.)
It turned out to be the catalytic convertor was plugged solid. What happened was the front convertor came apart and plugged the rear convertor up. Thus causing the power surging. I replaced every sensor imaginable (TPS, IAC, MAP, ECT, EGR, EVP, & OF COURSE THE LIST GOES ON)
But you see what I'm talking about. The enormous amount of backpressure on the system would cause the engine to surge.
Go to a muffler shop and see if they'll run a backpressure test on your system. The shop that did mine popped a hole in the pipe behind the convertors, in front of the back convertor, and in front of the front convertor.
