Wiper Arm removal?

How do I remove my wiper arms of my 65 f100 prior to getting the truck ready to paint? How easy is it to access the back side of the wiper arm mounts from the inside of the cab? Thanks for the help!

Wiper arms need to be pried off. there is a tang on the arm that needs to be pulled slightly while upward pressure is applied. A custom bent large screw driver does the truck.

The posts are up in there but have no attachment bolts. the entire assembly is held in place buy the top spanner nut. The spanner nut can be removed with a correct tool or buy careful use of a screwdriver.

Now is a good time to purchase a replacement bezel, spanner and leather seal from Carolina classics. Rick makes them so all the vendors carry Ricks part...About 40 bucks and has the correct cut and thickness leather seal.

I made a spanner wrench from a piece of 3/4" steel pipe ground down to two tangs to fit the nut. Copper Type L works too and has a less chance of marring the new chrome.

Thanks...I'll have a go at it using the instructions you've put here....the front air vent area near the wipers is pretty badly rusted, so I need to get those wipers and the windshield off to really attact the rust

Once you remove the wipers arms I recommend attaching some type of string to each bezel pivot shaft and once you remove the bezel nut and push the pivot bolts down inside the cal vent, it allows for a better paint surface and cleaning the recess area easier.
I bought the wiper removal tool from eastwood; its a snap with that tool verse prying with a flat head. Just be sure to hold the wiper arm with one hand and use the tool with the other. Those things fly off with that tool.

Thank You for the picture that will come in handy when I am taking it apart. Do you know the number for the tool to remove the (17A475) or you think I should just bend a flat head screw driver and make a tool?

A variety of tools out that can remove the nut.

Here's one example made by Scott Drake - it is sitting on top of one of the nuts in this picture. Two square nubs protrude downward to grab the notches in the nuts.

This is anodized aluminum but steel ones are also available. Either should work fine. I sort of like the aluminum version to help save the chrome as best as possible.

Here's a link to the web site. I bought mine off of ebay for about half that price.

How well does it fit? I can't tell from the photo.

I ground a socket so that it has the two tangs. Very careful use of a bench grinder to achieve that.

I bought a steel one from an Ebay seller a year or two ago and it did not fit well, so I returned it. The outer diameter was larger, which is not necessarily bad but the inner diameter was also quite large so care has to be taken while using it, to prevent it from slipping off.

It fits great. Here's a couple more pictures. I couldn't hold the nut tight to it in the second pic so the nut was wanting to lean away slightly and there is a gap in there as a result, but hopefully this gives the idea of how it looks.

I give it a thumbs up for quality.

This is more just an fyi than anything - or Larry can add it to the book!! sorry Larry - but as I reviewed that drawing I noticed that if 17A475 was the nut it was on the wrong side of the spacer 17514 which seemed a little odd but as I looked up those parts again the C1TB-17A475-B is the leather seal that goes on the inside of the cowl. They are supposed to keep water from entering the cab around the wiper shafts.

and the nut is not shown in that drawing that I can see. The nut is a hardware part number

On the subject of wiper arm removal, this tool is actually very handy, too. You still have to trip the spring clip underneath but this tool takes all of the spring pressure off of the arm so removing and installing the arm on the shaft is much easier - especially aligning it when reinstalling it. This is ANCO tool No. 101 I believe.
