Hi everybody,I just picked up a 1964 f100 Custom cab 2wd 292. I've been lurking around reading through the back pages gathering info on these trucks. I'm not new to turning wrenches but I am new to old ford trucks. Before I do anything I need to get a service and parts manual, I'm thinking of buying the downloadable manuals and then having the service manual printed out at Staples or Office Depot so that I have a hard copy and one on my computer. Has anyone ever tried this? My first order of business is to find out why the PO couldn't get it to pump fuel to the carb, the tank is leaking and they were trying to pump from a gas can. The pump looks pretty new and there are only so many things that could be wrong. I was thinking of priming from the pump to the carb by pushing gas through with a syringe and taking it from there. It will run when gas is poured directly into the carb. Thanks for the help.

Welcome to the forum. I really like 64's but then I'm a little prejudice. Post a few pictures and your VIN and one of the guys will decode it for you. ~Pat

Before you catch your truck on fire, get rid of the leaking tank! Inspect all the lines both steel and rubber. If they're rusted or rotted, replace them at the same time. Once the line is not obstructed and the tank and lines are sealed, fuel should drip steadily from the line at the pump end once suction has been pulled. Make sure your fuel pump is good by running a rubber hose from the pump straight to a gas can. If you don't get good steady flow to the carb, replace the pump.

Welcome to the forum!

The fuel tank isn't currently hooked up. I had thought about finding a shop to fix it but considering that a new tank is only $200 I'm probably going that route. The PO tried getting it to suck fuel from a can with no luck. I'm thinking that I need to prime it or that the fuel pump was installed incorrectly.

Check ebay for hard copies for the manuals. Most likely cheaper than having one printed

Fuel systems as well as brake systems can be a pain when truck sits for long period of time. Completely go thru both. Nice find. The tu tone paint looks sharp, not as common as the deluxe tu tone. '61-'64 pickups are essentially carryover engineering from the 50's, so you really have an 50's old school ride with 60's styling.

FWIW, I just had my behind the tank cleaned and relined for $300 (northeast prices). Just wanted to re-use original. I also like the two tone paint job. This is similar to what I want on my 61. Would appreciate a few more pics.

Manuals are available as reprints. So first, make sure having them printed will be cheaper than a reprint.

Another thing is that at least some of the electronic versions (cd, download, etc) have copywrite protection that make it difficult to print or require a key to install. So you'll want to make sure it can be printed and/or decide if you want to use one of a limited number of installs allowed by the key.

Regarding the fuel pump, a really careless mechanic can install it incorrectly so that the arm is in front of the eccentric and gets bent during installation. Another thing is that a small block pump will bolt up but the arm is the wrong shape to work. An FE pump will work so that gives you more options for replacement, if you don't need it to be absolutely correct.

I'll try and post some more pictures when I can. I got the fuel situation sorted out, once I primed it it i got to run. It ran poorly but at least I know it will run on its own. My project now is to redo the fuel system, I should have my new tank tomorrow and I'll fab all new metal lines while I'm at it. I just received a hard copy of the the 64 service manual that Ive already been reading through. I also found the very dry and fragile factory build sheet in the springs under the seat, the vin on the sheet matches my door tag,I'll post a picture of it to get decoded soon.
