Angry loud clicking noise from turn signal switch?

Example, if I'm turning the wheel to the left with the left turn signal on there will be a LOUD click, click, click ect. sound from the column. The sound is louder than the turn signal relay and can be heard with the radio on.

Today is the third time I've brought it in to have fixed and now they tell me it is "normal". They came to the conclusion that it is "normal" because two other trucks on their lot make a noticable clicking sound and one is just as loud as mine. However, My truck JUST STARTED making the noise a few months ago and was quiet when I originally bought it.

I know this is not a big problem ,but it is annoying and I want it fixed. Anyways, my Ford dealer had bailed out on me so how do I fix it myself?

Can you hear the column switch clicking ALOUD in your truck?

Thanks
Rick

I'm pretty sure that it is normal if you are talking about what I think you are. It is the plastic teeth in there that makes it so the turn signal automatically turns off when you straighten the wheel. The teeth have to bend a little bit to get past, and you are hearing them snap back into place. In some vehicles it is louder than in others.

Yes that is what I'm talking about, but it used to be quiet and now it is very loud. What do I need to do to make it quiet again?
Thanks

Guys, when in use, is the steering wheel column turn signal switch in your truck noticeably loud? Please answer yes or no.

Thanks

Rick, just a thought, but it maybe that the teeth had some lube of some kind on there and now has moved off to the side and was acting as a sound deadener before. This is a WAG on my part.

To answer your question mine is not loud, but when I pulled the steering wheel for some work on the shifter lever I re-lubed the pieces with a silicone grease. It never was loud but I was in there and figured now is a good time to lube.

I pulled the bottom steering column cover off and from there I was just able to see how it works. There is only a small amount of white grease inside the ratchet part and nothing on the gear.

There looks to be only two screws holding the turn signal switch assembly in place. If I take out those two screws will the switch come out easy or will a dozen springs go flying out?

Thanks for the replies

Ok I fixed it. All it needed was bit of grease in the right spot.

Thank you RIck for your post, i have having the same issue with my F250 and received the same feedback from the dealer. What/where did you access the parts that needed lube? Is it an easy fix?

YES!! I have a 1976 ford f100 and the turn signal did not click back when turning left. My steering wheel was also cracked and in bad shape. So, I purchased a new original steering wheel and new turn signal switch. When I picked my truck up, there was a very noticable loud click when turning the wheel. I asked my mec why and he said it was normal.... I do not like it! It never had the load click before. How do we fix the problem???

RickF350, Please read my reply to your post about load click coming from turn signal switch. With my 76 F100, when I replaced the turn signal switch and the steering wheel, the clicking became very loud. It was quiet as a mouse before I replaced the switch and steering wheel. Can you tell me in more detail what you did to fix the problem??? Driving me krazy!! Thanks, Jack

Hello. I'm having the same problem as Rick350. A very loud clicking when I use the turn signal and turn the steering wheel on my 76 F100. It was not there before replacing the turn signal switch and steering wheel (original). How can i fix this? I asked Rick for more details but no reply so far. If you have any ideas please let me know. Jack
