Ticking sound

I drive a 2002 F-150 pickup, 2wd, 5 speed.

I have developed some kind of ticking sound under the hood. It doesn't sound mechanical like a lifter.

It kinds of sounds like a vacuum leak, a fuel injector going bad, or the cooling fan making light contact with something.

The ticking is barely noticeable at idle speed, but the noise does increase when the throttle is applied. However, it can't be heard in the cab at any given speed.

It's one of those types of noises that "echo's" under the hood. So, it's hard to pinpoint the location.

Suggestions?

Get a mechanic's stethascope.
A great investment for problems like yours.
Makes isolating the source much easier.
