Red face f-450 transmition fluid

I Owen a 06 f-450 6.0 diesel I changed the transmit ion fluid according to the owners manual the five speed auto takes 17.5 quarts of trans fluid but when I drained it only 8 quarts came out I also replaced the external filter and filled the trans up with 8 qts and checked the level and it was perfect where do I put the extra 9 qts? IS this a miss print in the owner’s manual?

No, it isn't a misprint. The transmission, including the torque converter, holds 17.5 quarts. By only emptying the pan you didn't get any fluid out of the torque converter.

No. I do not believe that there is a drain for the torque converter...like in previous years.

What needs to happen...is usually a flushing tranny machine is used. Flushes out the old...and cycles in the new. Of course a process to do it without a machine is to disconnect the inlet and outlet hoses. Then cycle the new fluid by turning on the truck real quick. Someone watching the new fluid enter and the old fluid pumping out into a waiting bucket. Once the outlet hose shows new clean fluid...the process is complete. Usually a two person process.

No, there isn't a drain plug.

biz4two is almost right. The problem with doing that on a TorqShift is that there is a thermostat that limits the flow to the coolers to 10% of normal until the trans is warmer than 165F. So to do it right you need the trans heated to at least 170F, and also warm up the new fluid going it to keep the thermostat from closing during the fluid change. There are now heated fluid exchange machine for just this reason.

Wait 10k and do it again, you'll have replaced most of the fluid at that point and it will be fine.
