I thought i remembered hearing something about this but in my searching didnt come up with anything...
Is there any easy way to make the EBPV into a brake?

its easy to do but i had startling backpressure numbers when i played around with it unloaded on level ground, i would be scared to see the numbers at higher rpm with a load, a gauge would be recomended from me

I had a gauge on mine and I pull a 5er about 15,000 lbs. Going down the Saluda grade on I-26 in S.C. or coming down from the plateau from Cumberland county, TN. I would see decent numbers but not usually above 27-30 psi. or so in an extreme situation. Most of the time it wouldn't get above 25 psi. I believe they are safe just don't leave it on all the time when driving. I use mine to warm up and for braking when towing. You will be fine.
It is easy to hook up just cut the wire with the red tracer on it and supply a 12v switched line to it and then plug the plug back in.

I believe you do not want to exceed 40 psi.

DONT USE 12v. THE EBPV is 10V so you need to put resisters in to get 10v

I think you have the sensor confused with the regulator. The wire he is tapping into is for the Exhaust Back Pressure Regulator (EPR) which is 12v, More commonly called EBPV,

The Exhaust Back Pressure (EBP) Sensor is 5v.

Can i tap directly into the exhaust back pressure sensor to get a reading on my backpressure, or do i need to install a pressure guage?
Thanks for all the help guys!

The best way is to put in a T and run a actual gauge. I checked mine using an Auto Engunity, never got above 35 psi in the engine. I would watch on real hard use (above 2700 rpm's). With normal driving though (atleast w/me) is less than 2500 rpm's.
I don't know how much it would change but my tests were done on my 5 speed, haven't tried a automatic yet.

neal how did you get no more then 27 psi? what rpm were you turning? i could peg the gauge over 45-50 psi at 2500 rpm. also when using it as a warmup valve at 1200 rpm i was at the 30 psi mark...... i would have to find my post on the findings to get my exact numbers but the search feature has frustrated me again.

Coon, also, do you have intake and injectors? wouldnt these raise the pressure ?

I really want to ask you Are you sure they were that high? But I know you are thorough. Absolutely I NEVER had numbers as high as yours. That sounds extremely high to me. During normal driving my BP was about 2-3 psi below my boost all the time. And when I used the brake they jumped but not that high. I trust you and believe what you say but do you think your gauge is trustworthy? When I was idling and warming up it never got above ~5psi. This is very strange I would like to know what is up withyour numbers. I didn't think that our engines liked anything above 40 psi.
Also how did you hook up your gauge? I put a "T" right under my BP sensor and plumbed it to my gauge.

my normal driving was usually like yours, basicly the same as boost psi. i ran a mechanical gauge as you did and also used the factory ebp sensor via the NGS, whatever the reading is you just subtracted 14.7 from it to get the actual, the 2 gauges matched, i will borrow the ngs and re-run the test at all rpm levels and write my numbers down this time.........lol.

as for my mods-
stock engine at 245k
stock injectors
stock turbo
stock hpop
stock fuel system
homegrown intake
1705 superchip on max
c00nhunterjoe 14.7k icp mod
3 inch dp to 4 inch straight pipe
4.7k eot mod (was not on for test)

I left my gauge on all the time so I could see it in all situations. The only problem is that after several months the gauge got clogged up with carbon or soot. I sent it back and they repaired or replaced it. They said I could put some screens in line but they will clog also. I have the gauge back but haven't reinstalled it yet. I'll be gone this weekend but I may be able to drop it in next week and we can do some comparisons.

My mods are the same as yours except for the chip.
