with a stock turbo you won't be suprassing the strength of the engine. A stock turbo will die a slow death before you make enough power to hurt the rods or block.
as for making out of the box power any engine 99-00 will be good. Some where in 00-01 they went away from forged connecting rods to PMR (powdered metal rods)

They should, me not being the expert that tj is, but the block and crank stayed the same, but really they would be unneeded unless you are boosting more than the stock turbo does (not sure what that number is). Either way, with a turbo the compression must be somewhere around 20:1, man these engines are tough. I'm sure someone will correct me, but I am new to the diesel side of things .

Anyways, I need ideas for my project truck, basically i want a older diesel, preferably the 94 powerstroke, or even earlier. I hate the emissions of the newer trucks, and they just don't grunt like my old 86 6.9 did. But when they made the first powerstroke and tuned the injection the torque and hp numbers jumped so i guess it would be o.k to have a few wires under the hood. I like the simple early diesels, they are more reliable, and I don't have to worry, and they crank like crazy. Any ideas?
