The 95 F250 4x4 with 351W automatic needs a muffler and it has the original that splits to two pipes after the muffler. Question is, how would it affect performance to run a 3" pipe from the converter to the rear without a muffler??? Adequate back-pressure?? To noisy?? Your thoughts?

last week i took everything off from the cats back, including the muffler. ran 2 1/4 pipe out the pass. side in front of the rear tire. sounds good, a nice raw rumble. i noticed a good increase in performance. it seemed to allow the engine to run easier. vehicle listed below.

 

With just 2 1/2" straight pipes w/o cats you'd have enough backpressure I believe, so backpressure isn't a concern for you. It won't be OVERLY loud as the cats do muffle a lot. However, it will be loud enough for you to hear it at all times.

95' F-150 XLT 4x4, 302, 5 spd, MSD 6A, Flowmaster Exhaust, Sunroof, Clear corners w/ Diamond headlights, CD player with 2 10" subs and some 32" BFG Muds .

Blah, just my opinion but open pipes sound goofy and Cheby-ish. No matter what the vehicle that's running them, makes me think of this 80's Slowmaro that went to my high school with straight pipes. That car ran so badly and sounded so horrible that I nearly cried every time I heard it. I've never heard a car backfire so many times regularly.
The kid driving it thought it was cool as all get-out.
Anyway, if you want loud and super good flow, check out the Dynomax Ultraflows. Probably one of the best mufflers out there for the price. Personally, I'm not one for loud, and my 50-series Flowmasters are plenty loud on my GT, though the Ultraflows will sure sound nice on my 331 LX.

 

To clarify my question, I had several reasons to consider the "straight-pipe".
1. I'm being cheap! It needs a muffler and tailpipe from the cat back.
2. I'm not looking for a loud exhaust, just a decent tone and good flow.I thought the cat might be enough of a "muffler".
3. I'm just guessing that a 3" pipe would be good because, that's the size it has in front of the converter.
4. If need be I can put a decent muffler on with the 3" pipe.
Any other suggestion on a good flowing low-budget turbo style muffler??
I agree that some staight pipes are pretty crappy sounding and want to avoid that!!

This forum is great and it's proving invaluable as a mega-source of info. Thanx for the input.

If you want cheap, check out your local parts store for an Afterburner muffler. Quieter than open, but better flowing than a Flowmaster by a considerable margin, and costs like $40. That or a Dynomax Super Turbo, quieter than the Afterburner, doesn't flow quite as well but still MUCH better than stock, and maybe a hair more expensive, like $50.


Or a Cherry Bomb for $15.

 

Go for it. It will not be loud, with the dual cat set-up Ford had on the 87-96 trucks strait pipe is not loud at all. Don't worry about backpressure, I know two people with this setup and it works just fine.

 

I have an 86 F-150 w/ 302 and about 5 years ago I had the muffler and tailpipe replaced with 2.5 inch duals running straight out the back with 3.5 inch tips. I since have had to turn the pipes to behind the wheels because of trailer hitch clearance but it still sounds good and I have had no problems with noise ( as far as police) or engine problems. I think it is the best thing I ever did to the truck.

 

If you want cheap Summit has a cat back for $150
with 3" in and 3" duals out to the rear bumper.
Personally I have flowmaster thats what I like.
But my Dads w/summit exhaust has a nice deep
rumble to it. Don't run strait pipe, hollow a cat.
and put the exhaust on you will be much happier.

 

I purchased that same catback (3" SI/DO) you are talking about from summit racing and I didn't really care for it. The installation was an absolute B**** and I wouldn't want anyone else going thru that mess. The piping didn't fit quite right and it came out WAY offcenter and the damn thing was QUIET on top of it. Oh well, live and learn. You would be absolutely fine running a straight pipe/no muffler... the cats on these truck muffle good enough (as stated above).

summit racing has thrush turbos for 15 bucks. i have 2 on my 66 mustang and they sound damn good for the $. i bought 2 more for my f 100 but there not on yet. my truck came with glasspacks and my 66 did to. i hate em! the turbos have been on my 66 for about 3 years now and they still look ok-not rusted out. they sound a hell of a lot better than the glasspacks, which are just loud.
