dana 44 5 to 8 lug swap

I have a 76 f100 with a dana 60 swaped into the rear and I want to switch th front to 8 lug to match the rear. I heard this is a fairly easy swap, but I just wanted to know if anyone has done this and can I do it in my garage?

yup, it can be done very easily.
it has been over 15 years since i last did it, but i am pretty sure i used the hubs from a dana 50 for the conversion.

a dana 50 like the 3/4 ton ttb front ends used? 'cuz I've got one of those laying around (whole truck). I didn't think the spindles bolted up the same, but you said you just used the HUBs? If you can remember any tips or tricks from this let me know. Thanks

yup, D50 TTB.

i doubt very much it was a D44 TTB, cause it came out of a 87 F250 diesel 4X4 that we swapped a D60 into, and tossed the TTB setup after stripping it.
we may have used the hubs and spindles. i can't remember though.

what i do remember of it was the 76 F150 sitting there with siezed calipers and wasted rotors, and i said lets see if the TTB stuff will fit. and then stuffing an 8 lug D60 into the rear end a few weeks later so it was full 8 lug.

Cool, I think I'll check it out in the morning. I'll tear down the f250 and see what will or won't work. Otherwise it looks like I can just use the spindles hubs and rotors from a 79 f250. I'll post which way it ends up going, but it would be cool if the 88 ttb stuff will swap.

Rained for about a week here so I'm way behind in my chores so I haven't got to this yet, but when I do I'll post the results on whether the ttb stuff will work or not.

i have the same question...i have seen it dicussed in other threads but nobody has finished the story, if it worked and how it went???
will a 85 f250 ttb have the parts to make a 77 150 d44 become 8lug?

Yes- And it has to be a D44HD TTB if you have to swap the spindles as well. The D50 TTB has more bolts holding it on.
D44HD straightaxle on right, TTB on left:

My 84 F250 4x4 TTB had the same spindles as the D44HD I replaced it with.
FWIW, this will gain you no strength at all, the weakness is the axle tubes and universal joints. The D44HD has about a 3/4" larger diameter tube, with almost all of that being in wall thickness, but about the only thing you can do about the universals is get an upgraded set and axles.

i will have to check which axle is under there(d44hd or d50). i am not familiar with these axles yet so what is an easy way of determining which one i have? the truck is a county away and in an overgrown field, kinda hard just to look under there without a weedeater.
i am hoping to not have to change the spindles. i am rebuilding a 77 hp d44, and i have access to a free 85 f250(whole truck) so i was going to take the d60 rear and use the ttb front to convert my d44 to 8 lug. hopefully this will work like you said, and be the cheapest 8lug sas ever.

as far as strength goes, i believe these axles under a 2 door explorer will be more than adequate.

i have also read about upgrading the master cylinder to compensate for the larger brakes, would this be needed in my application?
i would appreciate any and all tips on the conversion, hell even the sas!
thanks ford_six
