Near Chico CA. I don't really want to ship, but I felt like I should grab these for someone.

1983 was the first year for a 4wd 460. Disc in 4wdthe in 76, 2wd in 73.........no way of finding out about the 360/auto in 4wda crews. No 4wd trucks ever made with 390 the engines. Only 360. Don't know why this was........

Pulling

Hello - I'm new to the site so if I'm not posting correctly please let me know...
I do have some questions and hopefully get some info on my Truck..
Here is what I have:
1978 F250 Crew Cab 4x4 SWB with 460Ci
Vin: F26SCBE4386
W.B. 150
Type/GVW - F250
Body - DZD
Trans - A
Axle - B4J
Max GVWR - 7300
DSO - 1978 762411

I would like to pull a goose neck camper trailer ranging from 6-8k lbs...I live in Utah so all sorts of terrain...
Rear Leaf Springs has 5 together and 1 under (straight)
Front Leaf Springs has 6 together
Rear Axle has stamped 60 , C-30255
When I jack it up I can spin one tire and the other spins in the same direction - Do I have Posi??
Front Axle has stamped 44-9F - Is this a Dana 44?
Transfer Case has stamped C11415 D N 4 = any help on his ID?
Trans has stamped C96391 8 AM on it ???

I plan on adding Airbags from Air Lift - any thoughts???
Any Thoughts on my Leaf Springs set up - is this normal - Truck has a 4" Lift on it and I'm running 35x12.50x16.5 Tires

Thanks for any info or thoughts...

your truck

Hi, yes, you have a 44 front, common on a crew cab,as a 60 was an option. your truck came with a 400, as it has an S in the vin, I would pull the rear cover and chevk the gear ratio. IMO, you will want 4.56 if you plan on keeping your 35" tires/towing. this is the max I would use on your dana 60 rear that should be 30 splines.

Firestone Ride Right,or, Air Lift are the same, just remember, they dont increse your GVW,they just help stable the load.hope this helps,

Do you think the weight would be to much for my truck to pull up in the hills?
Should I look into a rear Disk Brake Conversion?
I want to be safe on the roads - I know I wont be in the same league as the newer trucks but I personally think I have the better looking Truck on the road...

Thanks

hills

Brakes are a big deal. If it were me, I would look for a 1986-1996 ford sterling rear end, It has a larger ring gear at 10.25, larger brakes(most are 12/3) and 35 spline axle shafts. It should bolt right in,as your rear spring width should be the same. I would also go with drilled rotors for the front brakes. I did this to a 1986 f250 many years ago,and it made a big difference

This may be a dumb question; Could I take a complete rear end out of a 1986-1996 F250 or F350 and bolt it into my 1978? Did they come with Disk Brakes or would I still have to do a conversion? Is the Sterling better than the Dana? - I think I have 4:10 in it now???

80's & most 90's sterlingas are the 10.25 with drum brakes. '99 started the 10.5 sterling that had disks but also the 8x170mm lug pattern.

I'm looking for one of these to put in my truck & will adjust the spring perches and then have the hubs machined to fix the lug pattern.

You can pretty easily put disks on a 10.25 sterling but then parking brake is the hard part. LOTS of info on all of this if you do a quick google search.

drum

chasetruck754 is right on. Discs are the way to go. I have never done it or looked into it, but 98 up ford econolines used discs with the dana 60 and the correct bolt pattern..........hmmm, with enought time and playing.............

If your on a budget(as I always am) i would just use the 86-96 bolt in rear. I am for my 78 f250. The good, bigger drum brakes, bigger ring and pinion, bolt in,lug pattern correct, bad, 9/16 studs. (ok, i will change my front 60 from the 1/2 to the 9/16.......BFD)

Arizona Super Crew

I found this one while visiting Northern AZ. I don't know if he is a member here as I didn't read this whole post. The truck is really cool and has had some nice work done to it.
