Need advice on a good cam for a 460.

Im looking for a good cam for a 1970 460 for off-road and street use. The engine compression is 10:1 with a Performer intake and headers. Im looking for killer torque from 1500 to 4000 rpm range, nothing to radical. Anyone with past experience or have a good set up for off-roading let me know. Cam specs....lift and durations?

I built a 460 recently for basically the same purpose. I used an article in Super Ford as a guide, they're motor made 430hp and 530ft-lbs of torque at only 3700rpm, perfect for the application. They used the same intake as you have, and a Crane Max Velocity cam. The specs were .513/.518 in lift and 272/284 duration on the intakes and exhaust. You have plenty of compression as well. The only custom thing they did was grind the thermactor humps out of the exhaust ports, very simple. Let me know if you have any questions.

You should check out COMP CAMS 4x4 Extreme cams.. they are made specifically for a 4x4 engine in mind... I plan on putting one in my 429.

For your application the Comp Cams Extreme 4x4 cams are great.Choose the smallest one available,I think the lift is .505 with split duration of 255/268.I used this cam in my Project 468 ( a 1982 F-150 SC ) for moderate towing and some heavy towing and it make tons of torque down low where it's needed!..Hope this info helps Dave.

Yes the 260 series of cams work well in just about anything !The 34-231-4 is a stronger cam for low rpm operation that makes good torque. For the money the 260 is the better buy if your looking for a good replacement cam that is a sure fire! The 4x4 extreme series provide more torque and horsepower because of the new design and yes they are more expensive.I have used both and either of the two will do just fine, but if your looking for a little more streetable zap the 34-231-4 is it !....happy motoring Dave.
