Where's the thermactor bump?...

Just got the freshly delivered 1986 460 from the Econoline 350 this weekend and yesterday took the heads off. The intake has the smog stuff on it, but lo and behold - no tell-tale signs of the famous "thermactor bump" in the exhaust port that I've read about for the past few weeks in this forum. I've taken several digital pictures of the port and the heads - can somebody give me an email address you you can help me inspect these heads and determine what they are (I can send you some jpegs)?

Reminds me a lot of my older 427 days - both the intake and exhaust are oval / round. The exhaust port actually looks ported ---- direct access to exhaust valve; looks like a really straight shot. I'll be dropping the pistons out this week-end and checking the bores / replacing main & rod bearings.

I'm going to plug the thermactor crossover going from the BACK of both these heads at a local machine shop - anything else I need to pay them to do for street / every-day use?

Stay tuned for my web site and pretty (?) pics....,
Mark

Where's the thermactor bump?...

Send me a copy of those pics.. I'd like to see this!

Dual_Uzis(No Email Addresses In Posts!)

As far as other things, 3 angle valve seats, polish the valves, multi-angle grind on the valves themselves if you feel like it, port match the intakes to the gaskets (on both heads and intake).
Are you running EFI on that 86 engine?
Have fun!

10-4 on the dual uzis!! Will send you the pix of my bumpless exhaust ports this week-end. Maybe you can tell me more about it. The engine is not running efi, it has a Holley sitting proudly on top of the stock manifold, which will be REPLACED this week-end with an Edlebrock R-P-M and 750CFM w/ vacuum secondaries. I'll be using brake springs on the secondaries to keep my boot out of the carb !...

Where's the thermactor bump?...

Proud owner -

Feet are only heavy when I got my alligator boots on. I'm at work now - will send pix your way on Sunday.

In the meantime, why don't you go ahead and bookmark my web-site where I'll have links up for the truck probably in the next 2 weeks. Things are going really fast - the block is in the shop getting bored .030 over for $80 and the heads getting special attention at Tuck's Racing. Just ordered a 38 gallon fuel tank from JC Whitless. Here's the web-site....

Ummmm.. Got your pics!
Not sure what to make of them... They look like they were cast that way, as I see no evidence of previous port-work. Are those EFI heads?? If so, that would explain a lot, but if the engine came with carburation, Im stumped. I know they changed the head design in '73, and again about '78, and again to the EFI heads, but Im not real smart when it comes to late-model carb heads..
Still, they look like pretty hot ports. I had to do nearly 20 hours of port/polish work to make mine look like that! Maybe the machine shop can tell you more about them.
Thanx for lettin me look at them, tho, and Good Luck! Keep me informed of the progress.

Where's the thermactor bump?...

Mark,

I'd also like to see your pics... I'm doing a set of '75 heads (about 1/2 finished) and would like to see how they 'should' look when I'm finished...

thanks

john

Where's the thermactor bump?...

John ---

Thanks for the request, I just got to work - the pix are at home; I'll get them out to you tommorrow. I need some help from YOU though......it sounds as if your F100 has a V-8 in it....would you please measure the width and height of your radiator CORE and let me know what it is? I'm afraid before I can put a V-8 radiator in Harrison, his radiator core support is going to have to replaced, too......it now has the factory installed 6 banger and the support will not let any V-8 replacement radiator fit.

Let me know, please.....width and height.

Thanks,
The laptopgeek
