Ran out of Fuel

Ran out of Fuel
I found out the hard way today that the front tank doesnt read right on my truck. I spun the filter cap off, and there was still fuel in the bowl, so that I hope is a good sign. I was able to get some diesel back into her and it started right up. It runs a little rough, but it doesnt have any power. I cant even safely drive on the road. Not all of the time, it comes and goes.I left the truck at the jobsite I was driving to. My plan is to limp it home tonight when there is less traffic. Any Ideas? My plan is to change the fuel filter which has less than 1000 miles on it and then fill the bowl with diesel 911. Thoughts?
Thanks

i ran mine out once, 60 mph with the tc locked and it coasted for a good 1\2 mile carrying on then i lost too much speed to coast on the road so i coasted to the shoulder and let it sit and idle for a while till i had throttle response again, i would say it was a good 5 minutes before i was 100% from empty to full power

this happened to me and my friend once on the interstate. we were in the fast lane and he wasn't paying attention and forgot to switch the tank over. we coasted into the shoulder and had to wait like ten minutes for the truck to run right. (the state police even set up flares for us )it was running as if you unplugged one of the UVCH's sounded like it was going on four cylinders. is this how it sounds on your truck?

thats how mine sounded, i didnt have to wait as long because as soon as i felt it losing power i realized what happened and switched tanks, i let it coast in od with the converter locked so it kept the rpm's up to get the fuel moving in and the air out. it still had to sit on the side of the road a few minutes to get completly cleared though

just a thought...are you sure it ran out of fuel? you said there was still fuel in the bowl. there tons of things that will cause the fuel not to get into the cylinders, cps, idm, icp, ipr, uvc harnesses. all those would rob power and/or cause a stall. you said you drove it for a while, how long, shouldn't take more than 10-15 minutes max for the air to get through the fuel system.

Im pretty sure it is out of fuel. I switched tanks, and was able to fire her back up and drive a few minutes more, but that one was also out of fuel. As soon as I added fuel, it started back up. I did drive it, but I didnt drive it at highway speeds. only 5-10 mph salting. I am going to get it tonight. I will update then.

fill up the bowl and rev her up not to the red line but maybe say half way for like 2 mins I have the same problem when I change my filter because I never fill the bowl up just dump the old out but not completely then fire her up but after shes idled for a bit before you change the filter that way the oil has circulated and it not like dry start.
Let it idle for a min then rev her up for like a min or too bet she ' ll clean right out!!

I got her started up last night. I dont know what exactly it was, I held the schrader valve open while my brother cranked it, and after a couple cranks, fuel started comming out. I let her warm up for 10 minutes or so, and it ran better with time. It ran with out a probelm on the 10 minute ride home. Thanks for your help.
