I thought you was going to fix it Aaron it wasn't that bad. I have drove some at work and they feel underpowered to me compaired to my 7.3. But not as bad a 5.4L F-250 with a welder, heavy service bed, etc. 0-60 in 5 minutes.... Anyways my dad has had a V-10 2500 Dodge and a V-8 6.0 Gas GMC and he always put midgrad in there and gets about 10-12 MPG.

I had a 96 Dodge v-10 adn being an Airmen sure didn't help. its hurt the picket book, but was fun to drive. and you can't get the sound out of it like a V-8 for some reason. got a flow master and its sounded better, but not like an 8.
good luck. you could alwyas sell if if you can down the road. (hopefully)

Answer to your first question: cheapest frikken' fuel you can find. No, cheaper. No, cheaper than that. Without a computer upgrade I could pull a 7000# enclosed trailer on panther **** and it would never knock. Typically got 7mpg highway pulling the trailer, 14mpg with extended family inside only.
how terrible is it? my 97 powerstroke has been totalled this weekend. concidering a v-10 cause of purchase price
Though I loved that V-10, I went to a 7.3 diesel for a few reasons:
1) I wasn't looking, but this diesel Excursion dropped in my lap for a very good price, too good to pass up;
2) My V-10 was the '99, with the lower-flow, lower-pony heads. While it was "adequate" for pulling the trailer, it was not optimal. The better choice would have been the '03 (?) or later 3-valve heads; that's one pullin' mother;
3) Vans are de-rated versus the truck. Hurt my pulling power even more;
4) My early heads had the "spark plug" issue (look it up if you're not aware of it). While I had no indication there was going to be a problem, legitimate or not it made me nervous having that Sword of Damocles over my head, especially given I tow long distances from home;
5) I really had no need for a 15-passenger van; the Excursion was a better choice for me.
All this could have been resolved with a later-model Excursion V-10. And, given the same opportunity as what I got with this one, I'd have gone with a V-10 just as quickly. It's cheaper to buy, it's quieter, and it's smoother (almost silent on the highway). Don't get me wrong, I really like the 7.3L diesel (been a diesel fan for a long time), but the V-10 is a really great engine, too...
So, I've drank both Kool-Aids, and enjoyed the taste of both...

I still have both... just waiting for the State of Alabama to finally issue the title on my V10 Excursion, though, so I can sell it and get an Ex with the 7.3 like what I have in my F250.
I LOVE the Excursion, but the gas is KILLING me... it's literlaly consuming all of my mod money that I get from business travel reimbursements with my truck.
Excursion, V10 - never pulled with it, but it runs great and has lots of acceleration power, but she's also a lot like that old-time inline 300 straight 6 in my old F150.... flat performance curve and virtually nothing you can do to improve mileage. I average about 8.5 around town while babying it, and have seen a hair over 14 on the highway traveling at 75 mph.
Can't wait to get the one with the 7.3 in it!

If you'll post your email address, I'll send you and excel file I've created that creates an actual cost comparison between a gas vs diesel, depending on your annual driving data and local fuel costs. I think you might be surprised, depending on how much you drive and your city vs highway miles.

I used premium unleaded in my 1999 and my 2001 F250s primarily because my Superchips Tuner required it. On the tow setting with automatic tranny and 3.73 gearing I got around 12-14 mpg in town if I was careful with the right foot and when towing 6-8000 lbs I was averaging 8-10 mpg depending on the terrain. I own an 01 F350 Dually now with 4.11s and get at least 16 mpg around town and sometimes around 18 if I am very careful. Running BD5 (its the only biodiesel available in Las Vegas) and I am seeing great benefits starting with the first tank. I had a little surge going on but with the BD5 it is virtually gone. I really did not want to go to the diesel but I bought a living quarters horse trailer and when loaded we're talking over 10k and the wife wanted the dual rear axle for the safety factor and there were darn few V10 duallies around. Now that I have the diesel I am preparing myself for PMS; already have a long list of mods I will do; just waiting for the extra cash. Fortunately, my wife supports my PMS inclinations - she loves the torque on the F350 and wants more!!!

Had an 04 V10 Crew Cab Lariat. Traded last year for the truck in signature.
V10 was a good truck but I was averaging about 12mpg, town and highway, driving easy.
It will flat run but be prepared to feed it regularly. Like they say, the only thing it won't pass is a gas station. My main reason for trading was the quick depreciation and the lack of it holding its value.
They are hard to sell and dealers don't want to give you anything for them, especially when gas is high.
My 7.3 averages about 17 and the 7.3's are definitely in demand. It will be worth something when I decide to sell, if that day ever happens.
Good Luck,

I would try to make a deal on your Dad's truck. Too bad you didn't get it before he traded. You know the history of his truck......if you go with the 6.0, I would do quite a bit of research before I bought a light wrecked rebuilt 04. A good place to start would be Carfax, Oasis, try to find previous owners name, etc.
Good Luck
