Show Off Your Pre-97 Trucks
Mr. Thorngate perhaps you could describe your decent amount of work to that there 4.9 ya had?
Wow that truck is clean. Very nice.
As for the 4.9 work; I took the engine out and replaced all gaskets, cleaned everything up internally. Contemplated more internal work, but just didn't have the budget at the time. I went with an offenhauser DP intake and 456cfm Holley carb, EFI exhaust manifolds(cheap headers), and Performance Distributors one wire HEI distributor with their "livewires". I think that is the extent of what I did. Came out very well, but still wish I had done the internal work to support it.

^^Nice!^^ Can't believe that truck is 20 years old. Is that the original paint?
Thanks...That is original paint! The roof paint is a pretty weak, but the rest is very good. I have had it for ~3 years. I don't drive it unless it is going to be sunny, otherwise it is in the garage. I had a 1996 for 6 years, but lost the rust battle, so I search one like this out (never thought I would stumble into one with the Off Road Package).
This winter I replaced the oil pan gasket and saw a small amount of coolant in the pan, so then came off the intake manifold (that gasket was the culprit). BUT the bolts/studs in the intake on the driver side were rusted badly and one broke in the head. SO off came the heads.
So I'm all back together with a shinny restored pan, new gaskets, new hardware, new heat shields, new EGR inlet pipe, New Cap/Rotor/Plugs/Wires, vacuum lines, water hose, belt, ect, ect, ect.
So she should be pretty happy (but see my other post on the VSS issue )

Picked this 87 up recently to kick around in. Came with a really good 4.9 and 4 speed but needed some front end and body work. I'm pretty sure it spent its life as an irrigation truck. We don't rust here out west but this truck was rusted on the bumper and outer door panels.. I'm guessing from years of grasses and weeds smacking as the truck slowly rolled by. So I replaced the bumper and sandblasted the rust ****** on the doors and repainted the green on down. Above the green is original paint.
