My First Diesel - Do's and Dont's?

I was curious if you would be willing to help me? I have purchased my first diesel... 2005 F350 V6 Crew Cab Lariat with approx. 51K miles. The truck is in awesome condition and looks great.

Would you be willing to post your personal list of Do's and Don'ts????? PEARLS's of wisdom or the things that you wish you would have been told when you bought your first diesel?

I would appreciate any posts.

Thanks, Russell

Granted, there may not a a single thread on this subject in here, but it's all in here... Here are some things that are very good advise (if I do say so myself), but certainly not a comprehensive list...

DO: Use a fuel additive for improved performance, economy and protection
DO:Change your oil on time
DO:Change your fuel filters on time
DO: Drive it like you stole it now and then to keep the turbo exercised and the carbon cleaned out
DON"T: Use starting fluid, EVER!

DO: Read the entire tech folder at the top of the 6.0 forum. It's all good.

Congrats Russgriffin That is an awsome truck. ozx3+1 is right on. Educate yourself as much as you can about your truck. Read the threads in here and also the tech folder. There might be some things might want to do later on once you start to understand the engine.

I have posted this several times before. Hope it helps.

For Starters : VERY, VERY IMPORTANT - CLEAN OIL and CLEAN FUEL

HEUI systems (Injectors) - oil system:

https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/6...tml#post4664280

OIL:

Use ONLY OEM and OEM style oil filters (which are made by RACOR)
Lots of threads on this subject AND info in the Tech Folder.

Oil change at 5000 miles (drain water from the HFCM at this interval).

At oil change, add 13.5 to 14 qts. 1 qt. stays in the system. Do not overfill.

Oil type - Motorcraft 15W-40 (diesel) works fine.

Many use synthetics. They can provide improved high temperature stability, lower soot numbers and other benefits. A 5W40 synthetic in the winter seems to be a very beneficial choice if you are below 30 deg F.

Synthetics (order of increasing cost):
Rotella T Synthetic, Delo 400 Synthetic, Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel (or Mobil 1 Delvac), Royal Purple 15W-40.
There are many others, these are just some of the more common synthetics.

Do not go past 7500 miles on an oil change. The viscosity shears quickly to
unacceptable low values on all oils - even synthetics.

FUEL:

Get your fuel at high volume stations.

Change fuel filters every 10,000 (certainly no more than 15,000 miles).

Use a fuel additive that demulsifies water - NO ALCOHOL.

I have just begun to add BIODIESEL for lubricity at the 2% level - .5 gal/tank along w/ Stanadyne Performance)

AIR:

Use ONLY OEM filters (which are made by Donaldson).
No aftermarket unless you are heavily modded (over 500 hp).

Change air filter when filter minder shows the need (in the manual).
I change mine more often, to be safe - most say it isn't necessary.

OPERATION:

Let it warm up for awhile (30 seconds minimum, better 2-3 minutes) before driving.

Make sure you cool it down (Exhaust Gas Temperatures) after hard driving or towing.

Idling over 10 minutes is not good unless you increase the idle RPM's.

Reliability / Helpful Modifications:

GAUGES: EGT (pre and post turbo), Fuel pressure, Oil temp, Tranny temp, Boost, etc.

Coolant Filter

Fuel Filter (HFCM) drain plug upgrade

Fumoto oil pan drain valve

Oil bypass filter

ITP Return Regulated Fuel System

Lots, Lots more if you have the $$'s!

Russ, one of the things that has really calmed a lot of my concerns is having my oil tested by Blackstone. Contact them and they'll provide sampling bottles for you. Once I got that first report back it was a great relief!

Good luck!

Exhaust, Zoodad mods, Gauges, Turbo up-pipe mods with EGR blocker plate will make your truck get better MPG's ,more power, lower EGT's and your heads will thank you.
