Can I add "original" type turn signals to my 55?

Yes you can. I did this 20 some years ago when restoring my 53. I added the original style turn signal mechanism ( Dennis Carpenter product which bolted right in ) under the stock steering wheel and changed the bulb sockets or the socket innards ( can't remember which ) in the parking lights to work with turn signal bulbs. You may also have to add some additional wiring and a turn flasher if you do not have already. Good luck!

Here is a link to an old thread from this site. It was very valuable to me when I added turn signals to my stock 6v '53 . I used a Signal-Stat unit for the column mount, got it off of ebay. I think I paid around $20.00 inc. shipping. Nice heavy duty switch. It was a commonly used item in large trucks, jeeps, etc. Although it is not self canceling, it does give you 4way flashers that the stock unit won't. Remember when looking for a switch it must be 6 or 7 wire switch for brake light function.

Here is another link from another web site that deals with vitage military trucks if you decide to use a Signal-Stat unit for the switch.
