GM divisions, ie. chevy, buick, olds, and other car makers (packard, etc.) made straight 8's back in the 30's and 40's. But don't know what their cubic displacement was. However, if our Ford I-6 is 300 cubic inches that's about 50 ci's per cylinder...so a similarly bored straight 8 would be about 400
(50 ci X 8 equals 400). I've always wanted to play with one of those old straight 8's but never had the bucks. Maybe one day.

my father had a 37 Buick back in the Early 50's when he was in navy at pearl Harbor. MASSIVE ENGINE!!!! FLAT HEAD.

To get the head out they'd use a couple of crow bars, pry the front off the gasket and put pipe between the head and the block and roll it out off the front. Head weighed in the neighborhood of 350#.

TONS OF LOW END TORQUE! Don't know what C.I.D. was but they were Huge.

Im pretty sure the Chevy / Gmc school buses made in the 60's & 70's used the straight 8's & the best I recall they were in the 400 cu in range .

LAST EDITED ON 09-Jun-01 AT 03:17 PM (EST)[p]PAUL: GM based buses in late 50's/ 60's / 70's used either the 348/409 ("W" head (late 50's /early 60's)truck engine)or the truck version of the 427 / 454 big blocks.

There were some buses that actually used the big V-6 back then but they were'nt too popular (ran for @$%&).

G.M. stopped producing a straight-8 in mid/late 50's.

heres another one.. my dad had an old chevy with an inline six, it was running on five cylinders, because the guy who had it before him must have taken the front piston out, it may have been knocking, i dont know.
