6.0 Mileage ?

6.0 Mileage ?
My 2005 F350 Diesel on the best day got 14.7MPG per tank. I kept the rpm under 2000 when I started out. Kept my speed at 55MPH max. This is the best I can get? I read people getting 20 MPG @ 75 MPH what is up with this? I keep all filters and oil clean. Tires at there recomended tire pressure. Still I can't get anywhere near 18 MPG. What am I doing wrong?

I don't know either! My mileage is all over the place, if I drive all city with limited hwy I usually get 10-12mpg (10.9) today if I have it on the hwy I average 16-18 if I keep it below 70mph anything over 70mph seems to just waste diesel, I took a trip to San Antonio and I'll say averaged 85mph I had a couple 100mph stretches and got 14mpg! All highway too.
If anyone has any tips let me know, I tried to do the best I could this last tank I never let the turbo psi over 15psi and I rarely got past 2500rpm, and (granted it was in town) I still got 10.9. Very disappointing!

Mileage is affected by rear end gear ratio, tire size, cab size, vehicle payload weight, hrs on engine, fuel quality, wind speed, etc, etc. Also, you can't always trust the overhead "lie-o-meter," use actual fuel consumption and miles to get real-world mileage. Also, some engines just get better mileage than others.

I found that using the cruise control on a flat highway seems to have a positive affect on the mileage....
I get around 18 MPG if I press on the pedal and around 21 MPG if I am using the cruise.. You can hear the difference in the engine with the cruise on. Seems to be working less
I only get around 10 MPG around town

I have found the mpg plunges during cold weather especially with frequent short trips... Under 10 miles or so. Although I usually don't drive short distances, therefore my average mpg is fairly respectable for DRW at 15-16 mpg. I'd highly recommend a quality fuel additive, 5W40 synthetic oil, fully inflated tires and a light right foot

I've kept track since I got mine Sept '06. Over the last 6304 miles(lost earlier data) I've used 396.120 gallons of fuel. 15.9...mpg average. This is probably 95% city type driving, 5% freeway. Stock except for the muffler delete and Zoodad, but I doubt they make a huge difference. My worst tank was 14.9, best 16.6 mpg.

Hand calculated average of 16.3 mpg for 21,000 miles. Average mph is 49.2.

My milage is all over the chart - not sure how some folks can get numbers with very little variation (ie 1.5-2.5 mpg range from best to worst).
Specifics:
- truck is stock - see signature for truck specifics
- truck weight is just under 9000 lbs w/ tool box and a few people
- always use fuel additive
- mostly Low Sulfur Diesel - some ULSD
- 60-70% highway - most trips are at least 25 miles (very few short city trips)
- On highway - drive mostly 65 mph
- try to "floor it" at least once or twice per day for a short distance, just to enjoy what the 6.0 can do!
- tires inflated to 75 lbs
- Drive w/ a light foot - minimize traffic light stops
- The dips on the chart are from towing 5000 to 7000 lbs (6-7 times).
- synthetic 5W40 for last 5000 miles
- Cruise control or not - not much difference
- mostly flat roads, but can get windy (this can be a big + or -)
- 50% of the time the AC is on - seems to drop mileage by .25-.5 mpg

Don't expect any additive to dramatically increase mpg, though. One or two percent would probably be typical.

I use Diesel Kleen and try to keep my foot out of it and my best MPG empty was 14.7 I must be doing something wrong! Will a programmer or module help me get more MPG? I read that they do but what has people with them increased there MPG or any at all. Is what they tell me the truth? Or do they just deprogram HP to obtain the results? I just need the truth from owners!!!!

LOL, the truth is these are big honkin trucks. Even if a tuner could improve on the programming that hundreds of professional engineers developed while trying to balance power, economy, and reliability on these trucks, I doubt it would be worth what the tuner would cost you. Sure, I wish mine could get 20 mpg at 75 mph too, but I'm not going to spend money trying to reach that because I don't think it's possible. My 2 cents.
