new distributor seized (1969 240)

Just finished rebuilding my trusty 240 and had it fired up today...Ran great, no problems. First time down the road I drove about 5 miles and the motor quit. Dead in it's tracks. I was still getting gas, but no spark. Turns out that the NEW distributor had seized up somehow. It sheared the pin that holds the gear to the shaft. This bad boy won't turn at all unless you put everything you've got into it.

I've never seen this happen before. Oil pressure and engine temp were fine. Any idea what the heck happened here?... or did I just get a crappy re-man distributor?

There is a small oil cup on the side of the distributor (points at the drivers fender) 1: Do you see an oil felt in it? 2: Did you oil the felt? This how the shaft obtains it's lubrication. There should be another felt on top of the shaft under the cap. This is for the advance plate. Herman
