With your heater hoses only luke warm, and the gage only 1/4 up, it sounds like the engine is not getting warm enough. My gage runs from the middle up alittle, but without a manual gage it is hard to say what the real temp is.

There is something stopping the hot water from getting to the front heater core, maybe one of the heater supply lines has a internal colapse that is slowing down the water. Sorry I can't think of anything else.

heater hoses reversed on core which prevents core air purging?

I think 96_4wdrv's suggestion makes the most sense. The inlet has to be at the bottom of the core or you won't get any flow through.

water flow from engine comes from pipe next to thermostat housing and into bottom core fitting

water flow back to engine water pump comes from top core hose and goes to water pump fitting

later model Aeros have a vacuum controlled valve in the heater hose near the core inlets to stop coolant flow when the A/C is on.

these do fail or vac. line falls off
must be working thought if you have full flow with water hose thru the core

I have a T fitting on top hose for backflushing. When I run water through with hose it seems to run fine. When I run engine with heat on cap off T water seems to run through o k.Mine is 1990 and does not have a heater core valve on heater hoses . What controls warer to core or does it pass over core all the time I dont think it does.

depends on if the outflow heater hose is before or after thermostat.

after thermostat = water flows thru anytime thermostat is open and water pumps is spinning

before thermostat= water flows whenever water pump is spinning

after what occurance or maintenance did the problem appear?
overheating, heater hose replacement, thermostat replacement, heater core replacement?
