Broken glow plug into the cylinder problem

ok was changing the glow plugs today 97 7.3 TD, one of the glow plugs broke, but not on the threads, the heating element on the tip and inside components. i could not get it out and it fell into the cylinder, i took off the exhaust manifold to see if i could get it out and it doesnt work that way. Do i need to pull the head? any one have a schematic of what bolts need to be taken off and what they get retorqued to? I am mechanically inclined but dont know if this is something i should try. Any info is appreciated

I am pretty sure that you need to remove the head. Get the real answer from someone else here though, they will be by soon. Makes me wonder if you could remove the injector and try to fish it out of there with a magnet or some play dough on a stick.

BTW wecome to FTE. keep us posted we can fix it for you.

nope the hole in the injector cup is to small. even pulling the cup doesnt work from what i remember hearing. i would just pull the head and put a new gasket on. a guy last year decided to leave it in his cylinder and run it. well he got a hotspot and the truck started spewing the white stuff.

If you are planning on doing all that work anyway,, try pulling the injector cup....

If i have to pull the head, do i need to pull the fuel injectors, or just unplug them, if i need to remove them do i need a special tool or just pull hard on them?

7.03 mm injector hole

5.06 mm glow plug not scrubbed clean(slight carbon build-up) this is the TIP circumfrence only measurement. If only the tip broke off then yes it does fit out of the injector hole. But if it broke off any where above the tip then no because the dimension there is 8.09 mm.

I just measured this I hope it helps. Good Luck, desy

edit*** The tip is the only part that fits down the glow plug hole. I just saw this so yes you can fish it out .

Good sujestion on the injector cup BUT I just went looked at my heads that are off for my rebuild and removing the injector cup DOES NOT increase the size of the hole, as the cup does not go into the combustion chamber.

I looked all over and couldn't find a pic.. glad to finally know for sure....
