I had 7.3, two 6.0, and new 6.4 last week with 124 miles on it so far. The real test will be when I get home at 11,000 feet elevation to see if it will run correctly. None of my previous diesels would run and FORD had no idea why. One thing: My 6.4 runs as hard as my chipped 6.0.....if not harder Iowa Strok-n

Just out of curiosity why are you omitting the 6.0 from your choices? If you have the ability to seriously consider a new or even a used 6.4 then you should be able to get one of the later 6.0s(by 06 to 07 you should be alright as far as any major concerns that you would have with getting a 6.0). Also there are two reasons that I have for not getting a 6.4, A. the engine is new, little problems reported so far, but still relatively new to say it's squeaky clean and B. if you were to buy a new one(I don't buy used, don't like the though of even the remote possibility of gettting someone else's problem) from what I've heard Ford would even give you a hard time about changing the radio and the first thing that goes with my new vehicle purchases is the radio. I will say this point A is sufficient enough for me to stay away from getting a 6.4 til maybe it's last run(I think 2010) then maybe I will depending on what my mileage is on the 6.0 then I'll probably still change out what I want and just forget about the warranty work. Hopefully also by the time of their last run Ford would have made them a little more efficient as far as mpg as well, considering what I'm hearing that is also a downer for me on getting one. Bottomline if your just deadset on getting either the 7.3 or the 6.4, I would either wait little longer to see how the 6.4 does and then get it, but if you "have" to get it next fall then get as low mileage of a 7.3 as you can get.

I love my 6.0. the 7.3 was a good motor but I like the 6.0 better.

I don't have any experiance with the 7.3, but I do know that I'm with you and I really like my 6.0.

My dads old 7.3 came wrapped in the best truck he ever had, no problems with the truck or motor, but that was a 2000 that he no longer has, should be picking up his 6.4 monday or tuesday so hopefully it is just as good

I went through the same thing, after reading the forums I decided to keep my truck and do mods to it. It now runs better than ever. I will keep this truck as long as it runs.

Good luck.

7.3 4ever

I'll have to go along with the thought that the 6.4L is to new yet to make any assumptions, but the choking emissions crap on that motor(thank you very much epa) seems to be keeping the mpg's down a little bit to much for my taste. The 6.0 is a problematic motor that ford/navistar never seem to have gotten quite right. Too which i'll probably get comments like "I love my 6.0L" and all that, which is great if you happen to be the lucky one who didn't draw the short straw the day you went and purchased yours. From 1994.5-2003 Ford/Navistar had the best thing going in light duty diesel pickups, apparantly adapting that motor to meet emissions standards was to hard and for what ever reason went in a different direction. Ford still builds the best trucks but without a 7.3 under the hood its just another lemon waiting to happen. My 7.3 pulls as strong as the day it was new and with nothing but regular maintenance gets upwards of 20mpg's. To spend more money for an inferior(6.0) or an untested(6.4) motor just doesn't make sense. I appologize for the book but this is a subject I feel pretty strongly about, I could go on about this subject but I think this is enough for now, at least until I start getting the comments.

I test drove a 6.4 CC, KR, SB earlier this year and that truck is AMAZING. It was super quiet on the inside, accelerated like a gasser and the interior reminded me of a Caddy.

With that being said I did not trade my 7.3 for the new 6.4. It's an unproven motor and the inside of the engine compartment reminded me of the inside of my computer. The 7.3 is a proven work horse that should last another 20 years if you treat it right.

The other thing that's great about the 7.3 is that I doesn't have to comply with the 2008 emissions rules. So I can tune my 7.3 up as much as I want and I don't have to worry about the EPA...at least for now.

I'd spend lots of time finding the right 7.3 and then mod the hell out of it.

I'm sure it's only time before they would try something to get to you and be able to fine you for bellowing out black smoke despite not needing all the emissions equipment on your truck.

My dad was in the same boat as yours. He had 2 7.3's a 99 or 98 not sure now and a 02 which he just traded for a 08. Never had a problem with either one except for roasting a torque converter (but that was from runnin a race tune all the time). He wasnt even going to get a new truck but his dad is retiring from ford (he's been a mechanic there for 30 sum od years) and this would be his last year to get the D-plan. As for power his last 7.3l was tuned and it had more out-of-the-hole power than the 6.4l. But the 6.4 felt like it pulled harder once it got going.

Oh boy,

Well if i had bought an early 03 6.0 or had a 7.3 and was watching the issues with the 6.0 arise i might say the samething, wait for the 6.4 tell they get the problems out.

Well, do your homework, unlike the change from the 7.3 to the 6.0 which was a complete change, the 6.4 is not a new design from the ground up. The 6.4 is a in improvement of the 6.0. Basicaly a 6.0 with all the problems fixed. Starting with a 6.0 block with a bigger bore than add Redesigned heads, better injectors, more head studs, bigger head studs, common rail fuel injection. Twin turbos(less load on one) and better cooling. Ya the fuel milage is'nt that great but that just gives them one more thing to improve on.

As far as im conserned the 6.4 is a proven engine.

As far as pros and cons considering i own a 6.4 and came from a 99 7.3 PSD.

PROS CONS
7.3 PSD good milage
wont pull as good as a stock 6.4
mod friendly
Louder
easier to work on
Auto trans combo not that great
Will run on any diesel
More maintance intervals
Will run on Bio fuel

6.4 PSD pulls great stock
not as good milage
Quiet
Only likes ULSD diesel period
Great auto trans combo
Not mod friendly without PCM tuning
clean burning
Costly engine upgrade
Less maintance intervals
Dosen't like more than 5% Bio fuel
